Yeah it is safe, but riding with a pillion on bad patches may not be easy. You are your best judge. Carry a tubless puncture kit and cruise on safe speeds and you shall be fine.

Route
based on basic study Have divided the route in various small sections. Require further information on each.

PUNE TO MUMBAI BY PASS.. 150KM

Mumbai bypass will be NH4 - Gorbunder road- out of Mumbai.

--> Never been to mumbai on bike. would require detailed instructions on how to bypass mumbai traffic for surat.

I am assuming you would take NH4 to reach mumbai...
Proceed to Vashi > Take a right to Eastern Express higway at Mankhurd > At the end of the road you will have to take a right to be on Eastern Express road... Stick to it.
After crossing a toll gate you will encounter a few flyovers (If my memory serves me right, they are 3) the second last flyover would be Cadburys flyover. After which you have to take a left to Ghodbunder Road.

Keep going straight, (Traffic prone road - so try and time your journey appropriately) you will reach Ghodbunder Ghats... a few bad corners later you will be on NH8 (Fountain Hotel on right) proceed left wards and thats the route for you to take. A bit of bad patches uptill Manor. Goes better till surat

Mumbai to Surat 300KM

Good Road

Good roads beyond Maharashtra...

Surat to vadodara 150 KMs

Good Road - Try to reach Vadodra on Day 1 and halt here.. at max try to push your self to Ahmedabad as the ring road is tricky and traffic prone in the mornings/late evenings

Vadodara TO AHMEDABAD 120 KMs

then you have to take the busy road from there to Ahmedabad since bikes are not allowed on the expressway.

Ahmedaabad to Udaipur 250 KMs

From Ahmedabad-Naroda-Udaipur, the roads are great.

Udaipur to Ajmer 300 Kms

Try reach Udaipur/Ajmer on day 2

When you hit Udaipur, take the Chittaurgarh road (NH76 then NH79) instead of NH8, - the roads are much better. Keep on asking for Bhilwara and you would be directed to...
Then the road will join NH8 near Ajmer.

Ajmer to Jaipur 150 Kms

From there on, it is straight upto Gurgaon via Jaipur.

Please just answer for any stretch you know about.

I will keep on updating the first Post with added information. And this thread can be used in future by anyone for reference.

Is your journey only limited to Jaipur? You have good amount of days in hand. Or do you need to go to Gurgaon for ferrying the bike back to pune?

Assuming You are riding back to Pune as well:
If I were you I would proceed for Udaipur, halt for night here (not much to see here), then proceed to Jaipur and halt a day there...

I was hoping to get a reply from you.. after reading your blog on rajashthan trip some time back

I have already seen both blogs when they appeared..

Actually I am from Faridabad (50 Kms from Gurgaon) and my wife from Jaipur. We are turning our Diwali home visit in a ride.. though our folks will kill us once we reached there.

plan is
start Oct 30. 4 AM.. reach mumbai by 8AM and try to cross ASAP.
""I have neer been to mumbai.. so this is a sore area.. which I am afraid of most""

then lunch at Surat.. and eve Vadodara OR Ahmedabad.

Day1 halt here.

Day2 start 5AM.. target Jaipur but can settle for Ajmer.

Day : 3 --> buffer if not reached already on Day2.

will spend couple of days at in laws in jaipur then to Faridabad for a week.. then back to jaipur for couple of days and start back on Nov 12th. same route back..

given an option.. I prefer bike to train.. would never like to get my bike loaded if I even have a remote possibility

..

my wife and self have seen 2 years and 80+ rides on my P150 ranging from Pune-hampi.. pune -jogfalls in one day rides each.. so no probs in that..

Nitin: Good to see you planning this ride. The weather should be good and clear around that time. Satyen has suggested the best route through Mumbai but i guess you'll still be neck deep in traffic. No way to avoid that in any of the big metropolises these days.

Vadodara - Ahmedabad can be a pain. During our last GIR, we rode Ahmd - Vadodara on the NH8 via Nanded and Anand and it was not fun at all. Too much local traffic on the single-lane road. We tried a slightly different route the during our return leg (from Vadodara - Ahmd) which avoided Nanded and it was a lot better.

Vadodara - Ahmedabad while avoiding Nanded

Udaipur - Jaipur via Chittorgarh and Bhilwara is great. Dual carriageway and very little traffic. You could do it via Ajmer which has lots of twisties but there are numerous stone quarries along the route and so lots of half-body trucks ferrying stones dot the road. Not fun as fellow road users.

Take NH76 out of Udaipur and head for Chittorgarh via Fatehnagar. Udaipur-Chittorgarh is mostly a pre-cast concrete road. I remember vividly because the friction grooves on it were annoyingly buzzy for the R1's stiff and sensitive front end

. Shouldn't be a problem for the P150 though. Was not for the R-15 accompanying us.

The switch from NH76 to NH79 takes place near Chittorgarh. It is a pretty confusing maze of dual carriageways heading this way and that with flyovers and under-passes. Quite surprising to come upon such a major and planned junction almost in the middle of nowhere. Past this junction, the road changes from pre-cast concrete to tarmac. There's a BP petrol pump a few kms beyond this junction that had a Ghar Dhaba. Was clean and served good food about a year and a half ago.

All the best for your ride. I can't help you much on the road direction part, but can certainly say that travelling with wife even till 9-10pm is not as dangerous as potrayed by many. In fact, even after 6 months, I still get an earful by my relatives as to how Rajasthan journey could have gone bad! So relax, having wife as pillion is instead very charming and relaxing, and you can chat your heart out

Additionally, if she is good with camera, your travel time is reduced, as you just need to slow down while she clicks.

Only thing is you need to plan your bathroom breaks properly. Break after each 1, 1.5 hours at some hotel or atleast at the beginning or end of some village. Don't stop bang on the highway unless nature calls. A spare tire tube (even if the tires are tubeless) and pump will go handy. I travelled with accelerator and clutch cable too, its your choice whether you think you will need it. It is hardly an investment of some 500rs, and even if not used, you can always store it for future use.

Lastly, don't have any luggage on shoulders of anyone. Even a small shoulder bag will take its toll at the day end. Tie everything to the bike, or put it in pillion's lap, but not on shoulders.

the map is not clear. it shows via NH8 only. can you correct the same OR give me minor milestone by place names on the path.

great.. from Udiapur to chittorgarh.. then turn for NH79 towards bhilwara..
then bypass Ajmer.. go via shrinager and meet NH8 later..

riding together since last 2+ years and 80 + rides of some having 600+ KM in single day.. we have good coordination..
In maharashtra thats never a problem.. but being originally from Delhi, caution is in bones

already have spare clutch, brake cables and spark plug..
have cramster saddle and tank bag for luggage..

am thinking of buying tubeless puncture repair Kit but Air Pump is dificult as would take too much space..

know of any compact airpump within 500-600 bucks?

My fault there. Its Nadiad and not Nanded. There's some confusion in this for me I guess. There are 3 effective routes between vadodara and Ahmd. One, the expressway, is ruled out for bikes. Of the remaining 2, one is crowded and the other is not. I'll confirm this with a couple of Ahmd locals and update you.

I changed the route a bit... rather than going though Vashi bridge, I am taking you through Turbhe.. this one may seem like a small road, but it isnt... and it will be relatively faster. The vashi bridge route is supposed to be faster, but crossing the bridge can cause you trouble in the morning due to early office crowds..
