  • :( Yamaha FZ rear tyre have a big hole

Hey Guys need urgent help here.
One of my good friend owns a Yamaha FZ.

Few days back he had a puncture in the rear tyre. After getting it fixed by tubless puncture stip, it again punctured on the same place and the mechanic put one tubless puncture strip but the rear tyre was still leaking so he again put one more strip but in the whole process of fixing the puncture, the puncture became a big hole and now it is not able to retain air.

Now mechanic is suggesting to go for a tube in the rear tyre and a thick rubber patch to cover up the hole.

Now my question here is cannt we simply patch the hole with a thick rubber and seal the tyre to rim, by doing this we can still retain the Tubless feature of the tyre? What will be cons of this?

Or other option is we put the tube in and patch the hole and seal the tyre to rim and still we can use it as a tubless tyre?
I think whenever there will be a puncture in tyre and tube, we can fix the puncture(tubless strip) on the tyre and fill in air in punctured tube, since the puncture in the tyre will be fixed, air will not be able to escape from the tyre as well as from punctured tube?
What will be cons of this?

The bike has only run for 10k kms and still the tyre have a life of 10k more kms.

Guys please give your valuable suggestions as we need to decide in another few hours.

You can use a tube..but will you get one of that size?? even if you get one will it sustain the hole in the tire???
      My suggestion would be-
      1) claim the damages from the puncture guy since he did not check and used the right tools for sealing the tire. This might not be possible but yes you can try.
      2) Change the tire...its risky to ride the bike with such big hole....you try to patch it, noways it will come off soon. Any modification you do on this will help for sure but not for long time..max by 1000kms...but still risk is involved since the hole will be an open source for nails when running at high speeds...Get it changed.

These are two solutions which i can provide at the max!!!!

      Good luck mate!

Thanks brother for you quick reply and suggestions .

The problem with the rear tyre is, because of two or three tubless strips the tyre is not able to hold on to strips and air seeps out.

The patching seems to be good and thick and seems to hold for some time.
The bike is mainly ridden in city so chances of high speed cruz is pretty less. But the major feature we wanted to retain is tubless feature of tyre and in case of an puncture air should not seeps out in a blink of any eye.

What are the chances if we put Slime puncture sealant in tube, will the tyre retain air for more time or equivalent to tubeless tyre?

There are chances but dont take risk man...City rides do involve high braking where the tire does come under pressure....
About Slime it will or will not iam not sure cz you saying the hole is used for 3 puncture strips.....
          Change man

I will suggest to change the tire.
Since the hole is big none of the ideas will work good. And the thick patch you are talking about can be slippery may be.
Why to take a risk and be in a mess.

Yup.. Its best to change the tyre before you find yourself with a bigger problem..

The rims could go for a six for example.. and the FZ does have problems with bent rims because of potholes..

Hi You can try out mushroom puncture (for dual punctures on the same spot) . In Bangalore Tyre professionals used to do it. Its a trial and error process (FZ's rear tyre profile is very low , i dont think it can be done). good luck

I did fit a tube (120 i guess) with a rubber patch over the hole, rode it for about 1 month, worked OK. but then I had to go for a week long tour to Spiti Valley, So replaced it with a new stock tyre bought at Rs. 2350. didnt want to take rish while in the tour

Since your mechanic used the rubber strip system to repair the tyre and now suggesting that you put tube in it, it shows he doesn't have full knowledge.

Explain to him that putting tube inside it means removing the tubeless valve from your bike's rim. And new problems might occur later as things get complicated.

Now my question here is cannt we simply patch the hole with a thick rubber and seal the tyre to rim, by doing this we can still retain the Tubless feature of the tyre? What will be cons of this?
Its possible. There is a different type of puncture repair which involves the entire tyre to be removed and then a patch is applied on the inside. This patch is big enough to hold a bigger hole too.

Or other option is we put the tube in and patch the hole and seal the tyre to rim and still we can use it as a tubless tyre?
Seal the tyre to the rim? Put a tube and still use it as a tubeless tyre? Didn't understand you (?)

                      No, that won't happen.
If you have both tyre and tube, you won't be able to fit in the rubber strip repair on the tyre's puncture.
That is because the rubber strip will protrude within the tyre and disturb the tube, pushing it inwards. Eventually, either the tyre will get imbalanced & fat from one area OR the tube will push the rubber strip out.

Do this: First get your tyre replaced with a good 120 sized rubber. Keep the older tyre with yourselves. Take it to various puncture repair shops and ask them for a "patch based" puncture repair... Most probably, a good shop should solve all problems.

And remember, FZ tyres do have this problem of frequent punctures, even more than those in R15's tyres somehow.
So, get P220's rear Zapper-C (120x80/17) installed. Don't worry, it will grip good enough.

                        My Opinion

Get the tyre replaced as soon as possible,

Reason, personally seen after getting a big hole in stock rear tyre of FZ, it does not work for long time, I have seen this issue with 4 bikes till now
While going out for a long time you will always get prompt for damaged tyre again & again

so for being tension free get the tire changed, I would suggest you to go for

New model Tyre for FZ from MRF?

yestarday i went to MRF coimbatore to enquire about my fz's rear tyre frequent punctures and cracks along the grip. The Service Manager examined and asked me to replace the tyre under warranty by paying 600 rs as depreciation fee.

Then he enquired with someone and asked me to wait for 15 more days as MRF developed a new tyre for FZ because of YAMAHA's request and it is 130/70 in width he added.it will improve the mileage and 24000KM they are giving guarantee.

IS this true??is it worth waiting?

also, they asked me to use mushroom patch for punctures and not to insert that stick like thing in the hole r puncture as it may wear along with tyre and will leave air gaps.Mushroom patch have good quality as they work from inside.
