  • Law in Nebraska which will allow Motorcyclists to jump Red lights!

Lawmakers in Nebraska are planning to pass a bill which would make it legal for motorcyclists to go through even if there is a red light.

The bill poses a condition though. A motorcyclist has to wait for two minutes at the red light and make sure that there is no other traffic on the road to be able to go through. This is being planned because motorcycles are too small and light to be able to trigger off the sensors at the intersections. This leads to bikers having to wait extraordinary long minutes before they get a chance to cross.

Needless to say the traffic police is against such a bill as it would be very difficult to implement. The practicality of finding out whether a motorcyclist waited for two minutes or not is rather difficult to gauge in real world situations.

A very different scenario than what we see in India where motorcyclist generally jump the red light, without caring whether it is legal or not! In this country first the bikers need to be educated on how to stop at a signal before allowing them to jump lights!

If he has to wait for 2 mins..he'd rather wait for a minute more and wait for the signal to turn green...

Seriously? This is horse S**T. Already there are enough outlaws abroad to keep the cops on their heels. But this two minute rule is where the parody is. Imagine an outlaw outrunning a cop. Suddenly the red light goes on. He stops, looks at his watch, two mins and then VROOOM. Seriously? Only in AMREEKA

                Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
                The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

                THE END

nobody researching what the sensors do ?
I presume they check the traffic density and turn green accordingly to facilitate movement and lesser waiting.
But as bikes don't trip this sensors they have to wait until the whole time period finishes or until some heavy vehicle comes.

I don't presume they would be that dumb to make any odd laws would they?

The sensors and the waiting need more clarification how it works in normal scenario.

I have heard of these laws before, this is not new news to me.I think this ain't so bad, as long as the motorists are careful enough to check for oncoming vehicles in all directions before jumping a red light. But if these rules are implemented here in India, it will only lead to more accidents.
P.S: Frankly speaking, I myself jump red lights when there are no traffic coming from any other directions.

I am prity sure there is not such LAW in our country that allows Bikes to jump a red signal, if you have any reference to back up your claim pls enlighten us.

PS - As far as this law goes I guess it makes alot of sense.

LOL what an ignorant thing to say. As the article suggests, the lights are not on an automatic cycle. They sense traffic and turn green/red. But bikes are too small for the sensors to account for, which means a lone biker could possibly never get a green signal.

IMO they need better sensors or just standard non-sensing traffic signals than this stupid rule. It's downright dangerous.

                          Folks,
In states like california, the signals are trigerred by Traffic density (input from several sensors) as many of you have rightly said.

when I was riding in the streets of the LA, I had this same problem, the weight of rider and the motorcycle does not trigger the several sensors on the road. Most of the time I used to wait for a CAR, then lights would turn green. If it was just me, then the sensors think that there is no one on this road, so the signal never turns green. However in LA, during civilized hours, there always used to a car around. Thus I did not have to worry about the signal.

Now in LA county alone, the population is quite high 3,819,702 (2011) so the chances of car in your lane is quite high
However when it come to Nebraska state, the population is - 1,855,525 (2012), what are the chances of cars being in the same lane at the same time?

Hope this justifies the new Law that Nebraska is trying to pass ....So bikers will get a sigh of relief post this law.

Now you could argue that they should change the sensors? right, sure there is a reason or plan to do it in the future or the cost involved in the changing the sensors is not making economical sense at this time!

The Country is recoveing from the worst recession since the great depression.

Why are they passing this strange law, imagine the imense pressure the law makers are having from the Biking Community

they could have simple saved money by installing traffic lights which rotate on crossroads just like india...and have a device installed by which pedestrains can press the butto and make the light go red...and there should be a program that doesnt allow pedestrians to keep pressing the button and never allow the traffic light to go green....this could have saved so much more money they spent by installing sensors...if they have money to install sensors...they have money to install better sensors too..

Our traffic lights are dumb devices they dont sense which roads are choc-a-block

Consider this a bylane would be important or the expressway. Keeping expressway decongested would be prioririty right?

The sensors do this they sense the traffic and work accordingly keeping green for roads with more traffic effectively easing the traffic flow.
