  • Government to Tighten emission norms for two-wheelers

Government is planning to tighten the two-wheelers emission norms as 80% vehicles sold in India are two-wheelers and they emit nearly four times more oxides of nitrogen (NOx) than petrol cars. The new new emission norms are likely to be announced within a week.

Earlier this month Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport Minister announced the timeline to rollout BS-VI emission norms.

    Government official said -
"Studies have suggested that pollution caused by two-wheelers is very high in cities such as Delhi. While we support the industry as it is a vehicle for middle-income groups, two-wheelers need to comply with stricter emission norms."
Out of 1.97 crore vehicles sold in India in 2014-15, two-wheelers accounted 1.6 crore. In order to reduce the environmental impact by two-wheelers, the government is set to announce more tighter emission standards.

According to government, NOx emmision limit for BS-IV petrol car is 0.08gram/km but for two-wheeler it is 0.39 gram/km. BS-IV norms for two-wheelers have been set and will be effective from April 2016 for new model and April 2017 for the existing one.

Government has already declared 1st April 2020 as deadline for cars to adopt BS-VI emission norms. But now it is expected that BS-VI standards will apply to two-wheelers as well. The announcement on new emission standard will be made later this week.

        Hello

On daily basis i saw Two wheelers creating too much pollution, why pollution authority provide them PO certificate. Even i ask most of the riders that their vehicle is not well please visit Service centre . In delhi there should be strict check on vehicles who are creating pollution. And strict instructions should be given to PO vendor to not issue PO certificate to whose vehicles whose having issue . First rectify their Vehicles then come to us. I am sure if these steps should be follow then we can improve our environment status .

          Sorry for this noob question

To bring down the emission levels in a car or bike to comply according to the BS standards, what technical changes a vehicle would go through. Can someone enlighten me here please.

Bajaj's 4 month boasting seems in line with the govt's policy, or is it the other way around?? They wont do anything about other sources of pollution. Its just the vehicles that are targeted always.

re: Government to Tighten emission norms for two-wheelers

why only two wheelers and cars? why not the autos and commercial transport vehicles that emit pollution?
not to mention the old vehicles that "padosi uncle" uses since it's "sentimental" and part of their "family", keep it inside your house and maintain it..
I see the major pollutants are the old autos and RTC buses along with the "waste" carrying trucks of the municipality corporation.

why no norms for the water tankers? the tankers from filling water and by the time they reach their destination, they will be half empty, the tap always leaking, why no control there?

live long.. live happy.. that's the best revenge that can be served to the people who hate you..

A good move but again, implementation is doubtful.
