  • Carberry Enfield heads to India, Scouting Suppliers

Carberry Enfield is all set to introduce its 1000cc V-twin motorcycles based on Royal Enfield 500cc engines in India. The company has found an Indian investor named Jaspreet Singh Bhatia who has convinced them to move to Bhilai for its new base of operations.

If you are a motorcycle enthusiast, you must have heard about Paul Carberry. Paul is the man behind Carberry Enfield, the firm that successfully crafted 1000cc V-twin engine based on Royal Enfield 500cc single cylinder engine. The company sold 13 such motorcycles in Australia before they closed operations because of rising raw material and manpower costs.

Live-Mint has spoken to them and if the news reports are to be believed, the company will start selling 1000cc custom made motorcycles in India.

In terms of mechanics, the bike will be powered by 1000cc, 55-degree V-twin engine based on the Royal Enfield 500cc single-cylinder engine.

    Jaspreet Singh Bhatia said,
    Paul Carberry said,
But the big challenge for the company will be to meet Indian homologation and emission norms. Government has already declared that they might be leapfrogging from Bharat Stage IV to BS VI emission norms by 2020, in a bid to adopt pro-active strategy to reduce pollution.

    Paul Carberry said,
The bigger challenge, according to Carberry, will be in finding the right parts suppliers.

    Carberry also said,
The Carberry Enfield retains the original parts of Royal Enfield as much as possible. They develops custom-built crank cases, reworked frames and fuel tanks to accommodate the V-twin engine. So that the bike could be fixed as easily as possible.

It will be too early to quote a price for one such motorcycle. But considering the fact that motorcycle will be manufactured locally in India might drop the cost of production to over half of what it was in Australia.

It's a custom after all. Doesn't DC rebrand all other cars under it's own badge? Looks mean, though!!!

            Interesting.

Jay Leno's garage featured a Twin RE. It was modded by a person of Indian origin.

I hope they will iron out all the problems and niggles that Cast Iron Engined models had. Even if they charge a premium. They will have a following of their own if they deliver on the quality front.

Even though I am excited about the idea of seeing a cast iron bullet V-twin (though I did'nt follow Carberry before, I loved that video of Jay Leno and Aniket of Musket V-twin), I cannot help but wary of the many obstacles in their path to set-up shop in India.

                  1. About ARAI certification, I'm not sure if any particular provision for custom bikes. I think in places Germany, you can get type approval from agencies such as TUV (which is also a cumbersome process). Unless they get some arrangement with RE to register them as 1000 cc bullets (which I think they will not agree).
                  2. this cannot be a factory line assembly, but a one off made-to-order custom build. So price point will be higher.
                  3. I don't think they will be able to meet BS-IV with cast Iron cylinder and carburettor. So again they will face with issue with ARAI. They will have to go with UCE and fuel injection only. But going this route will kill half the charm for prospective buyers I guess.

I mostly agree with the points you have mentioned.

For ARAI certification, they may have to go for homologation for an all new model. But this would mean they can't go the custom way, unless they mean custom color schemes with bolt on accessories, or advanced design schemes like custom engraved names and logos, or fancy components like headlights and all.
Price point also is a big problem, the kind of price they mention will pit them against Bonneville & Harley Davidson directly.

Plus, Enfield can't even satisfy their domestic demand presently, so how can they be expected to supply stuff to other companies?

I personally don't see much business sense in this project, but I would love to be proven wrong. I know Enfields are in demand, but a 7 Lac Rupees Enfield doesn't seem to be... At least, not in huge numbers, if at all.
Not to mention, various supply chain and sales issues that the company will have to face...

I wish them best of luck anyhow...

Spares and services won't be a problem imo. Question is whether they can sustain till 2020 and have enough funds to spend on R&D to meet BS VI norms.

"Carberry motorcycles is a popular Australian custom bike builder, most famous of its V-twin 1,000 cc*Royal Enfields. The brand now based in Bhilai, Madhya Pradesh, has announced the release of its complete running engine, which includes the primary drive and the transmission. The company has not included the exhaust system because it’s frame-dependent. Carberry has also announced that complete bikes will arrive later this year."

"While Carberry Motorcycle has so far revealed only the new powerplant, the exhaust note is enough to get fans on cloud 9. Displacing 1,000 cc, this air-cooled, OHV, pushrod four valve motor has a bore and stroke of 84 mm and 90 mm respectively.

The 55 degree V-twin mill is capable of producing 56.32 bhp of maximum power at 4,800 rpm and 108 Nm of peak torque at 5,250 rpm."

This sounds like a man in retirement jumping to the starting line to compete in a race. A decades old technology and troubled engine doubled up with (probably well designed) reinforced chasis and custom transmission including gears. Yes, there would be and odd person here and there interested in owning such a piece, but at that price you can't sell much of these, even if they make it eventually to a dealer.
