  • Triumph Motorcycles to pull back its bike assembly plant investment from Karnataka

Triumph Motorcycles has urged Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for the refund of the investment that company made for the 30-acre plot at Narasapura industrial area in Kolar district (about 50 km from Bengaluru) for the bike assembly plant due to government's uncooperative approach.

UK-based premium bike maker had zeroed in on the southern State of Karnataka for its local assembly plant back in 2012 which was supposed to start within a year. The initial plan was to set up an assembly unit with an investment of Rs 850 crore in two phases. The company had even paid an advance against the land acquisition for the project to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) which was cleared in 2012 it self, but failed to move further because of land-related quarrels.

Triumph proposed manufacturing capacity of 2.5 lakh premium motorcycles per annum, which would create employment opportunities for thousands.

The UK based premium bike maker is now seeking for a refund of the investment made for the assembly plant at Narasapura. They are now planning to make the Manesar plant stronger.

As per Bangalore Mirror reports, apart from Triumph Motorcycles there are four other big investors who are looking to pull back their investments from Karnataka and this is happening when neighbouring states like Telangana and Andra Pradesh are getting aggressive in bringing more investors in the state. In-fact the E-commerce giant Amazon has moved its fulfilment centre from Bangalore to Hyderabad.

Triumph’s last ray of hope is IAS Officer Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) new CEO, he told Bangalore Mirror that Triumph had placed a request for the refund.

"We do not want Triumph to move out and we are keen on having them here. We will hold talks with the company again and sort out the issues."

Good decision, beneficial for both sides IMHO.

KA govt is lax when compared to competing states, so it loses out on the opportunities earned.
Especially Bangalore and nearby areas, have no more space. No new firms please! Its maddening out here and not long before this turns into Kolkata.

In fact, at least 1/4th of the firms should move out to a different tier 1/2 city.

Earlier and I mean 33years back Bengal had 33000 yes 33k industries, but the then govt decreased it with Union problems into less than 3k. Here in my area, kharagpur, Vidyasagar Industrial Park has plenty of space, Tata Hitachi, goodrej agrovet etc big companies are here but still the govt is facing issues with bikes or car manufacturers to bring them in Bengal. 🙍. Bengal is right in the middle of South and northern states, exporting interstate would be much easier as every vehicle that is manufactured in South goes through Bengal route to North and vice versa.

Unfortunate to see this from the government here though. Especially at a time when congress is losing its clout and Karnataka is losing its investors sheen.

It's very unfortunate if it happens and the state will lose out good investment for years to come. But apart from Govt apathy towards economic development and progress the land acquisition is a very thorny issue in our country. If most of the land in the region is in private hands then governments can't do much if the people cannot be convinced to sell their land for industries for a mutually beneficial settlement. It requires a lot of discussions to clear the doubts and promises which have to be kept should clear up the land problems but both these things are too much to expect from a lethargic government which is sitting pretty on it's a**.

The government's in our country don't act if there is something purely beneficial to people, their actions are totally self-centered- how much money will the deal bring in to the party, else please come tomorrow, a tomorrow which never comes.

Triumph should not return to Karnataka at any cost which would mark a essential learning at present. The government should lend their ears when someone request something and moreover all my road taxes goes to non existent roads and countless hours of traffic signals apart from never ending construction and dust. I don't know where all my tax money go.
