Default Driving License soft copy to be valid soon?

Soon, we can ride on the city roads without carrying the hard copy of driving license and other documents such as registration and insurance papers.

The economics times has reported that road transport ministry has proposed allowing soft copies of driving license, registration and insurance papers as valid for documents verification purposes by the police.

In a bid to further ease the process of application of license or registration. Applicants will also have the freedom to apply for license or registration with any of the regional transport offices (RTO) in a state and window for renewal of license will be one year from date of expiry against the present norm of 30 days. This will avoid repeat of several formalities. But the holder of an expired license won't be allowed to drive.

The ministry has also proposed making helmets mandatory for children over 4 years of age.

Last month, Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said that Indias Motor Vehicle Bill will be re-drafted within a month in line with advanced international practices to enhance road safety.

Good initiative thought we should also keep a eye on our cops that how fast they get educated about the new rule once it comes into effect.

Currently your DL gets points because of a traffic violation. The chip DLs at least. How will the cops do that with a soft copy? Scan a QR code or something?

Some of the technology used in the govt sector tends to be neglected/unused/not implemented across the board after the initial excitement.
If everything is centralized and the cops have a handheld device, they could simply enter the document number (e.g. license, registration) and rack up fines/cases against an individual. forget the fancy chips and qr codes.
Again, if they want to, they could do it

In telangana one can ride with a soft copy of the document (they have provided an app for users to download), and also one can ride with attested copies of the driving license and rc (no need to carry originals.. at least within the state). I only keep attested copies on me when riding within the state and keep the originals only during out of state rides. And so far, nobody has ever asked me to produce the originals.
Please check the rules in your respective state.
