  • Ban on high denomination notes may impact growth of entry level two-wheeler segment

In the wake of the recent events, the ban on high denomination notes has had a great impact on the growth of the entry level two-wheeler segments.
As per ICRA’s estimates, rural markets account for about 60- 65% of the entry segment motorcycle sales and given the high propensity for cash purchases in the rural markets, the entry segment of the motorcycles is expected to be a casualty.

However, ICRA believes that the adverse impact is likely to be a short term one. With strong structural factors and demand drivers, the two wheeler volumes are likely to revive in the forthcoming months.

In the official press statement ICRA has stated that entry segment two-wheeler’s near term growth momentum may be impacted by the ban on high denomination notes: ICRA

The recent move by the Government of India to ban the legal tender character of the high denominated bank notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 issued by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from the midnight of November 08, 2016 is expected to have a moderate adverse impact on the domestic two wheeler sales volumes in the near term – a sector which appears to have been on steroids posting a growth of 16.0% growth (YoY) during April-October 2016.

While the prevalence of the usage of unaccounted for cash for purchases of two wheelers is not as high as in certain other sectors, the temporary liquidity issues owing to restrictions on cash transactions entailing bank notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominations is likely to affect the demand for the segment of two wheelers which are cash-purchase driven. As per ICRA’s estimates, rural markets account for about 60- 65% of the entry segment motorcycle sales and given the high propensity for cash purchases in the rural markets, the entry segment of the motorcycles is expected to be a casualty. Though favourable monsoons have been a significant trigger for healthy demand from the rural markets during the current fiscal, most of the sales have been sentiment driven given that the kharif crop sales have commenced in October / November.

However, the recent ban on high denomination notes and the consequent constrained liquidity may result in dip in realisations as well as delay in realisations of crop sales thereby causing postponement of demand for such vehicles. Additionally, unavailability of adequate cash during the preparation of sowing time for next Rabi season is also likely to have a bearing on farm incomes in the next season. On the other hand, the >500cc super-premium segment is also likely to witness some volume pressure given the relatively high prevalence of unaccounted for cash in the purchases of this segment motorcycles.

Nevertheless, owing to minimal contribution of this segment to the overall two-wheeler sales, the impact of the same on the domestic volumes is likely to be negligible unlike that of entry segment motorcycles.

However, ICRA believes that the adverse impact is likely to be a short term one. With strong structural factors and demand drivers, the two wheeler volumes are likely to revive in the forthcoming months.

According to Subrata Ray ,Senior Group Vice President, ICRA: “The Government’s move to withdraw the legal tender character of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 denominated notes could negatively impact demand in the short term for entry level motorcycles that have a sizeable rural customer base.

Given that the ban on currency notes coincides with kharif crops reaching markets, there could be an adverse impact on realisations as well as cash collections for farm community. Additionally, with restrictions on cash availability and farmers’ priorities of deploying the same for sowing requirements of winter crop besides servicing other obligations, the demand for two wheelers may be postponed”.

Re: Ban on high denomination notes may impact growth of entry level two-wheeler segment

    Good Read! Appreciated.

    My observation:

There would not be any slow down due to change in currency, as there is no reduction in purchasing power of the citizen. The two wheeler market at entry level is totally dependent upon the direct income from the agriculture produce in villages and youths getting a job in urban areas apart from other reasons for daily commute. In our country, the basic transport is just for name shake. Shortfall in basic commute is being compensated by entry level two wheeler. Hence market analysis seems not factual.

Effect of Note ban on bike sales and cost.

Recently 500 and 1000 rupee notes have been banned due to demonetisation. I am wondering what impact will it have on the sales of bikes? Wil it reduce the cost of bikes immediately?

Yes, there will be an impact. But this is not due to black money but more due to shortage of liquid money in peoples hands. The amount of black money as a % in two wheeler market is very low IMO so it is a short term adjustment as they say.

The heat is on already for both four and two wheeler industries!
Almost all of them has cut down on production and is also having off-production days. Inventory carrying costs are a serious thing to deal with!

Re: Ban on high denomination notes may impact growth of entry level two-wheeler segment

There will definitely be a serious sales impact, specially in rural areas.

Although logically, people paying through bank accounts should have no problem at all, but the main problem is fear of the common man due to lack of stability. People, on the general, are getting fearful and they're saving money or investing, etc, as they check news everyday for changes.
Even Gold has claimed a decrease in prices, despite this being a marriage season.
The liquidity crunch has also stopped a few deals, where the parties had money but not enough liquidity.

A small factor in favor should be that, single people who wanted to purchase a car, might now shift to bikes, but that's not strong enough to save the day as more often, they'd settle for second hand cars instead.

A signal of stability is needed by the government, for the market to get set go again.
As of now, rumors exist that now government will go after multiple registered properties, gold reserves, etc. which are not helping the cause.

I think by April 2017, situation should be more stabilised.... I hope so.

I was hoping that this would be the best time to look for good deals on new purchases.

End of year + Decreased sales so companies must be giving great discounts and emi offers.

                      Lets see.

Not exactly! Firms like RE, Maruti etc work on the funda of waiting period. We'll be able to gauge the number of inventory moved month on month only after 3-4 months and then compare that to the previous months in the same fiscal year. These are mostly older orders moving out. How many new orders are placed, will be seen.

Recently been to India, Kota. I was hoping there wont be any effect due to demonetisation. Visited some bike showrooms. To my surprise found either sales are down or booking stopped for some period. Clear sign of business slow down, even though its temporary in nature. But business lost is lost.
