Mahindra had entered MotoGP in the Moto3 class in 2011. Over the last 6 and a half seasons the company has had a quite a successful stint. Getting on the podium on 13 occasions and taking 3 wins as well. A big achievement considering the company took on established manufacturers like Honda and KTM.
The maximum success the company enjoyed was with their 2016 rider Francesco (Pecco) Bagnaia who gave them the 3 wins. Incidentally, the first win for Mahindra came at the Assen round in 2016, the same place where they have now announced their withdrawal from the series.
Mahindra has stated that they want to focus more on electric vehicle racing and thus need to exit Moto3. The factory-backed Aspar team and CIP and Peugeot Saxoprint teams will continue to get support from the Indian manufacturer for the remainder of the 2017 season.
After a fantastic 2016 season, this year has turned out to be somewhat of a disaster for Mahindra. The manufacturer being able to score only a handful of points and having the best finish of 14th place. The withdrawal of Mahindra from the series will now see only KTM and Honda competing in Moto3.
It has been fantastic to see the Indian manufacturer participating in the pinnacle of motorcycle racing and it is sad to see them leave the sport.
