The 1290 Super Duke R broke the record comfortably! The fact that the rider was racing the Pikes Peak for the first time makes it even more impressive. Chris Fillmore might be a rookie here, but he is a former AMA Pro Superbike racer! The Austrian manufacturer will be delighted with their 1-2 finish. Rennie Scaysbrook took second place for them. Third place went to Bruno Laglois on a Kawasaki Z900.
Watch the video as Chris Fillmore fires it through the 12.42 mile (20 km) course. The Point Of View video is breathtaking as you watch Fillmore making the 1000 metre ascent. Ducati used to dominate the 'Race to the Clouds' as it is popularly known. KTM and Kawasaki have stepped up their game to take fight to the Italian manufacturer. It is quite the feather in the cap for the Austrian manufacturer.
This was the 94th edition of the Pikes Peak race which started a century back.
This is what Chris Fillmore had to say about his race, “I set out with the goal of trying to break the record this year and I wanted to do it as a rookie, so to achieve this is something really special. The bike ran perfectly, but I had a scary moment on the fast entry to 19 Mile corner, when the bike went sideways at 120mph on the side of the cliff! I was able to keep it under control but it’s certainly something I don’t want to go through again!”
