After the qualifiers, the grid looked like this:
- Cal Crutchlow
- Dani Pedrosa
- Johann Zarco
- Jorge Lorenzo
- Marc Marquez
- Alex Rins
- Andrea Iannone
- Andrea Dovizioso
- Danilo Petrucci
- Valentino Rossi
- Maverick Vinales
- Jack Miller
Lorenzo made full use of the Ducati’s power as he blistered past the riders to the 1st position while Cal Crutchlow slipped to the 5th by the end of lap 1. Zarco, who was going good in the 3rd slipped to the 7th place as he ran wide with 21 laps to go. Alex Rins who was looking really good in the 5th position ran wide, lost the grip of his front tyre and crashed with 20 laps of Jerez still left.
Cal Crutchlow, after setting a Pole lap time of 1’37.653 seemed to be struggling during the race and crashed with 18 laps to go at turn 1. In the same lap, Marquez who had been lining up Lorenzo for a manoeuvre for quite some time finally passed him at Turn 13 of Jerez. Ironically, the Turn 13 is also known as Lorenzo corner and that’s where Marquez passed Lorenzo to become the race leader.
Right in the next lap, Andrea Dovizioso, who was number 1 in the championship points table before this Sunday, overtook Pedrosa and gained 3rd position. After that, a gruelling battle ensued as Lorenzo tried to defend his spot against Dovizioso and Pedrosa tried to regain his spot from Dovizioso.
With 8 laps to go, Turn 6 saw the much talked about 3-way crash of Spanish GP as Dovizioso made a move on Lorenzo to gain the 2nd position. Dovizioso took the inside line from Lorenzo but ran wide. Dani Pedrosa saw an opportunity to overtake as both the Ducati riders ran wide, but Lorenzo pushed inwards to regain the racing line and crashed into Pedrosa. Pedrosa suffered from a massive high side while Lorenzo ran into Dovizioso sending both the Ducati riders into the gravel.
This huge crash gave Zarco the 2nd spot which he maintained throughout the race but remained quite a few seconds behind Marquez who took his 1st position to the last lap and in turn to a victory at Jerez.
The crash also ignited a battle for the 3rd position between Iannone, Miller, Rossi and Petrucci. Petrucci who was in the 3rd place made a mistake and paid for it as Iannone overtook him with 2 laps to go and ultimately finished the race in 3rd.
Marquez raised his left hand before the last turn of the last lap and after that came the celebratory dance on his Repsol Honda as he crossed the finish line well ahead of Zarco.
