  • Sale of non-ISI helmets to be banned after two months

"According to a recent notification issued by the Road Transport and Highway Ministry, manufacturing, storage and sale of non-Indian Standards Institute (non-ISI) certified helmets for two-wheelers will lead to arrest without warrant. Penalty for first offence would amount to a two-year jail term or a fine of at least Rs 2 lakh. As this move will be applicable after two months, dealers have a grace period to liquidate their existing stocks."

"Coming into effect from January 2019, the new standard directs helmet manufacturers to limit the maximum weight of their helmets to 1.2kg, instead of the current 1.5kg."

This means, well-known international brands like Arai, Shoei, AGV and HJC will be illegal till they adhere to ISI standards.
Do we have a petition against this out already?

    Topic Approved.

Yes, we have a petition against this. Check it out and sign here:- https://www.change.org/p/isi-india-b...share_petition

1.2 kgs limit means essentially all these imported helmets are to be gone from the market. Or they'll probably be black marketed too, by certain people.

This is wrong. I request Xbhpians to sign the petition above. Remember, not even one of you should hold back, we're a minority in this big country!

The simplest "fix" for this would be for the government to simply deem a list of well-known international standards as being equivalent (or better) to the ISI standard e.g. Snell, US DOT, ECE, maybe the Japanese/Australian one. That way the ban doesn't have to be cancelled, and can still work to remove unsafe "fake" helmets from use. It beggars imagination to believe that a high-end Shoei or Arai, costing in the Rs40,000+ range, is somehow unsafe simply because it lacks the ISI decal.
