  • 2018 saw a considerable number of BMW G 310 motorcycles being sold?

By what seems to come as a surprise to most of us (or does it), BMW Motorrad G 310 twins have done quite well in India when it comes to sales numbers in 2018. After a lot of hoopla surrounding the motorcycles which came at a premium, this comes as a surprise to many. But as history has shown us, when it comes to ‘quality products’, even our rather sensitive consumers are willing to shell out the moolah for it. And the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS have exactly that going for them.

Talking numbers, BMW Motorrad have sold a total of 2187 units in 2018. ~75% or 1640 units of those are the G 310 twins. The G 310 R is priced at INR 2.99 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom) and the G 310 GS is priced at INR 3.49 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom) which didn’t really go down well with many. And even then, the Bavarian beauties have found respectable number of buyers. When it comes to the competition, the TVS RR 310 and KTM 390s manage around 300 units and 500 units per month respectively. The BMW G 310 twins manage around 270 units. Where the numbers may seem bleak for BMW, they are not that bad considering these bikes are relatively new.

BMW Motorrad never wanted to indulge themselves in the numbers game, they wanted to accentuate their identity as a premium brand and well, that seems to be working. And the success is even more pronounced when one considers that BMW Motorrad currently has only 9 dealerships up and running across the country. Although the performance of these entry-level motorcycles from Bavaria have been satisfactory to some extent, some more dealerships are surely going to help them further.

The G 310s have been performing quite well in the international markets as well. There were a lot of positive words from people all around the world regarding the baby Beemers. And as a result, BMW Motorrad and TVS Motor Company rolled out the 50,000th unit of the BMW G 310 motorcycle from its Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu a few weeks ago. A feat celebrated in the presence of Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad, and Mr. KN Radhakrishnan, Director & CEO, TVS Motor Company.

Commenting on this milestone, Mr. KN Radhakrishnan, Director & CEO, TVS Motor Company, said, “Today is a significant milestone in our journey with BMW Motorrad. Over the course of this six-year partnership, we have had an opportunity to create a common learning platform for both the companies resulting in the creation of aspirational products for the global market. It is heartening to see BMW’s foray into sub 500cc segment meet with positive response across the globe. We are delighted to be a part of this success story.”

Adding to that, Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad said, “Six years back, we took a crucial step with the decision to enter into the sub 500cc category in partnership with TVS Motor Company. In them, we found a perfect partner who have always stood for high quality and technology. We are delighted that we are rolling out the 50,000 unit of our 310 series motorcycles in less than two years. This reaffirms our decision to offer BMW Motorrad quality-led premium products for the sub 500cc segment.”

The exports for these two BMW Motorrad models, BMW G 310 R and BMW 310 GS, commenced in December 2016 and today, they are being offered in more than 90 countries.

Hosur is not in Chennai. Hosur is a city in Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu.

Nothing to be surprised here, this was expected that they will sell more once they started giving ₹40K+ discount, free insurance, RSA and bent their knees and removed/reduced the handling charges in some parts of the country.

But we all know they plan to somehow recover those discounts from customer with hefty service bills!

The numbers don't seem bad and we have to consider that this was in last 4 months since they announced it sometime during Sep '18. But GS version is just priced way too much and it shows in the numbers.

As long as the have a good export market they can feel happy about this partnership as I don't think India numbers will change much drastically over the years.

They don't even care or dependent on Indian sales, they are mainly using India as export hub. Imagine the profit they have already made from those 50,000 bikes sold internationally , that is more than enough to sustain the 310 product line, out of which Indian share might be 2K units max.

So they are not fighting for Indian numbers with KTM/Bajaj/TVS/Yamaha/Kawasaki/RE, I don't expect to price to change and get competitive, "either take it or leave it" kind of attitude is going to continue because they are getting what they want from exports.

I am guessing most of these numbers are from those brand conscious people. They have the money to shell out or they might be in love with the brand that they did not even think once if the bike is value for money.

Bike is very good but the pricing is too much when you look at it from a VFM point. But considering the brand BMW, I don't expect them to place their bikes in the mass KTM price bracket. If they would have done this, the roads might have been filled with BMWs today losing the premiumness, exclusivity of owning a BMW.

G310R is a CHEAP bike in the BMW stable. Just because its "BMW", it doesnt make it a premium bike. There is nothing in this bike that is actually premium. If you say BMW as a Brand is premium then so is Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha.

Do keep in mind that the G310R is Made-in-India, hence it makes absolutely no sense that it is priced Less Than the KTM Duke 390 in the international market whereas in India it is priced massively More Than the KTM Duke 390.

The ideology that a BMW bike will lose its "premiumness" if there was a large number of this bike on Indian roads, is the most pathetic and BS ideology I have ever heard. People need to stop with this "Premium Culture"

When BMW announced the pricing, everyone knew it was a SCAM, but those who bought the bike did not want to believe it and bought the bike anyways. (no offense to any G310 owner) And now you can see that some of those owners are facing problems to which BMW is apparently not providing a response let alone a solution.

I do hope their problems get solved at the earliest because in the end we buy motorcycles to enjoy them.

Completely agree with you on this. I for myself know that KTM is far more value for money in every aspect when compared with the BMW g310s. I said that based on an average Indian mentality.

Owning a BMW or a AUDI in the States is like owning a Hyundai or Maruti in India. That is the benchmark. But India is so obsessed with a badge that people think owning a BMW will make you invincible. The badge talks all.

I have seen people sticking up BMW or Merc badge to a Maruti, modifying a Bajaj Avenger or RE to look like Harley.

We are completely obsessed with the brand image and badge value which would make them ignore the VFM or feature aspect of a particular bike.

Indeed, this culture and mentality has to go. People buying the G310s are openly admitting that they are allowing BMW to rip them off and they are not ashamed of it. But who am I to say this? Afterall I own just a puny little 155cc domestic motorcycle that is far from being "Premium"

                              Off-Topic Note:
As long you are open good at heart and b*lls of steel, nothing can make you more or less and shame you infront of someone who own more "Premium" things than you!

Be it bikes, gears, car, phones, laptops, clothes, shoes, bags, watches, electronic gadgets etc etc! We Indians have an intuition to associate anything expensive is premium and gives them a status symbol, but at the EOD we all know that's not the case and that they are just getting taken for ride.

But reality is that people know that one made a fool of himself when he had so many other VFM products.
If the person is happy with his choices and goes on with his life like rest of us then I have no problem, but if he starts to look down on someone else and judges others for not having something "Premium", then that's where I have a problem.

Hope you got what I was inferring
