Ex-MotoGP rider Alvaro Bautista took part in his maiden race in WSBK today and boy, one cannot have a better debut. The Ducati works rider did not only beat, but obliterated the competition by winning the Race 1 of Phillip Island by almost 15s! He is the first one to win his debut race since Max Biaggi did so in 2007.

The qualifying went almost like clockwork with the Kawasakis claiming the first two spots i.e. Four-time World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea in the first and Leon Haslam in the second place. Alvaro Bautista was placed 3rd in the qualifying.

But the race was something else entirely. As soon as the lights went out, Bautista took the lead in the first lap and then rode to victory 14.983s clear of Jonathan Rea who was placed 2nd in the race. Leon Haslam showed a lot of grit as he battled Rea for the second place but crashed out later on. He still picked up the bike though and finished 15th.

After the crash of Haslam, Rea was being tailed hard by Yamaha’s Alex Lowes but in the end, Rea was successful in defending the 2nd spot on the podium. Lowes who was seemingly going to finish 3rd, lost the position to a charging Marco Melandri of Yamaha who picked up the pace in the second half of the race. Ultimately, Alex Lowes had to make do with the 4th as Yamaha’s Michael van der Mark finished completed the top 5.
