    Stage 1

Hero MotoSports Team Rally continued its strong run at the Pan Africa Rally 2019 in the first stage of the Rally. Joaquim Rodrigues is placed third while C S Santosh is placed ninth in overall rankings at the end of stage 1.

Riding-off from the ceremonial podium, the Prologue stage winner, JRod made a solid run to arrive at the finish line and break into the Top-3, securing the 3rd place in the overall rankings.

His teammate, C S Santosh, too had an enjoyable outing in the dunes of Erfoud as he brought a flawless stage home with a 9th place finish.

Kicking off in Merzouga in a long liaison of 275 Kms, Stage 1 of The Pan Africa Rally presented a mixed terrain with sand, loose gravel and hard pack, offering riders saddle time and valuable sand riding experience. The Second of the five stages of the Rally will take the competitors for a run of 290 kms in the Erfoud region challenging them with a terrain mix of dunes and fast piste.

Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “It was a good experience for me to open the stage and I really enjoyed it. I was able to hold on to my position for the most part and arrived first as well which felt good. I made a couple of small mistakes but overall it was a good first stage and I am happy with my performance. I am keenly looking forward to stage 2.”

C S Santosh, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “It was really nice to start in the dunes in the morning. I had a good flow and really enjoyed my time in the dunes. Later on, we encountered a mix of fast piste and areas where attention to roadbook was needed. Overall, it was fun riding in the fast stage and I am happy to start the rally on this note.”

    Stage 2

Hero MotoSports Team Rally, the motorsports team of the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, today further improved its position in the ongoing Pan Africa Rally 2019, with team rider Joaquim Rodrigues claiming victory in Stage 2 of the Rally.

At the end of the second stage, JRod is top of the rankings in the overall standings. His teammate is CS Santosh is placed at the tenth position in the overall rankings.

The shortened stage, of 145km, saw the brilliant Joaquim Rodrigues blaze through the first half of the stage to bring in another stage win for Hero MotoSports Team Rally. He had earlier won the Prologue Stage.

C S Santosh also continued with his solid run by bringing home another stage for the team. He finished the stage 2 in 11th place, enabling him to maintain his Top 10 spot in the overall rankings.

Stage 2 of the Rally started today with the promise of another great day of riding for the competitors, however, some organizational challenges at the Refuelling point forced the organizers to cancel the second half of the stage.

Stage 3 of the Rally will challenge the competitors with the longest test yet with 450 kms of riding under the clock. The results of this stage will have a definitive influence on the final standings.

Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “A very good day for me today. I started pushing ahead right from the beginning and tried to catch the guys in front of me. But by then the dust was really terrible, making it difficult to see anything. I kept my cool and managed to pass two of the riders in front of me and arrived at the refuelling point in the 2nd place. Too bad that they had to cancel the second part because of some technical problems, but for me, it means that I get a good win for my team, so I am very happy.”

C S Santosh, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “Yesterday when we were working on the road books, it looked like a long and fast stage. It started that way but was shortened to 145 kms by the organizers. I made a few mistakes in the beginning and after that just concentrated on following the roadbook right to the end. So overall, not a bad day as I got my bike to the finish line and will build it from here over the next couple of stages.”

Joaquim Rodrigues finished the stage in third position, which keeps him at the second spot in the overall rankings. With this result he remains in contention for the top spot during the remainder of the Rally. His teammate, CS Santosh delivered a solid run during the stage, which helped him to improv his standing significantly as he broke into the Top 5 in the overall standings.

Stage 3 of the Rally was the longest and probably the most crucial stage in determining the final standings. It saw 445 kms of competitive riding in the mixed terrains of the Merzouga region.

The penultimate stage of the 2019 Pan Africa Rally will offer one last big test of 280 km for the competitors before the short final stage on September 27.

Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “It was indeed another fabulous day for me. I opened the stage, pushed hard in the beginning and gained on some crucial time. In the second part, I got into a wrong river bed, of the several parallel ones and lost a lot of time in coming back to the right track. I had to again catch the guys in the front, which I managed to do. Overall it was a good day with a third-place finish. Happy that we are still in the battle for the win.”

C S Santosh, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “Stage 3 was really long and tough. I did a good job in the first two parts of the stage with good navigation and a good flow. I even gained some time. In the last part though, the tape of my road book came off and I had to stop a couple of times to fix it. I then had a small crash too. It was quite a physical and challenging day, but I think I tackled it quite well, so I am happy to bring home another stage for the team.”

re: Hero MotoSports Team Rally at the PanAfrica Rally

Hero MotoSports Team Rally, the motorsports team of the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero MotoCorp, today emerged victorious at the 2019 Pan Africa Rally. This is the team’s first Rally win for the season.

Team Rider Joaquim Rodrigues ‘JRod’ was crowned the winner, as he achieved victory for the Team after a consistent run throughout the six days and 1500 kms of the Rally. This is his second international victory with Hero MotoSports, the first one being BAJA India in 2017.

JRod has had a solid season so far, making a painful and long recovery from his crash in the Dakar 2018. This win puts him in good stead for the remaining two big rallies of the season, including the Dakar Rally 2020.

His team mate, the only other rider for the Team in this Rally, CS Santosh also had a memorable rally as he achieved his personal best and the best ever result by an Indian in a rally outside India. His fifth place finish was the outcome of some really gritty and consistent performances across all the five stages of Rally. This result will provide a boost to his confidence and preparations for Rally Du Maroc and the Dakar 2020.

For Hero MotoSports Team Rally, which was set up only three years back, this is the first win of this season and the second overall in their still young career in the international rallying. This season the Team’s performances have seen a consistent improvement over the previous years. The Team has already achieved three podium finishes this year, including the podium finishes at the Merzouga Rally, Desert Storm, and the victory here at Pan Africa Rally 2019 today.

With the strong momentum of good performances, the next stop for Hero MotoSports Team Rally will be the Rally Du Maroc in October, which is considered to be the last training round before the Dakar Rally. With Dakar 2020 in sight, the four rider strong Hero MotoSports will look to further intensify its focus delivering good results.

Wolfgang Fischer, Team Manager and Head, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “A fantastic week of racing came to a highly deserved culmination today for JRod and Santosh. My compliments to the entire team for putting up a great performance and thanks to our fans and supporters. JRod’s journey has been an inspiring one! From his dream debut at the Dakar and winning the first ever rally for Hero MotoSports in 2017, to his severe injury in Dakar 2018, and then to make an impressive come back today, is something special. Santosh has been a Global Ambassador for the Indian motorsports fraternity and posting his best ever result today, will bring a lot of positivity for him and the sport in India. Looking forward to our next race in eight days, where for the first time, we will start with the full strength four rider configuration.”

Joaquim Rodrigues, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “I am really happy with this win. The past couple of years have been difficult for me after my crash at the Dakar in 2018. My road to recovery has been long and painful and I am happy to be finally getting back to my 100%. My confidence is back and my back is really good now. Congratulations to Santosh also for doing a great job and posting his personal best. My thanks to the entire team for supporting me and giving the best possible support. This win is for Hero MotoSports Team Rally.”

C S Santosh, Rider, Hero MotoSports Team Rally said, “It’s been a really good race for me. I was consistent and getting better with every stage. You always push yourself to do better than before, race your own limits. Finishing fifth here today is very satisfying. I am quite happy with the way this season has progressed and with my training, so all we have to do now is to build on it to the Dakar. Big congratulations to my buddy JRod for a fantastic win and a big thanks to the awesome team here and our fans.”
