  • TVS Motor Company is queuing up to take on Norton Motorcycles!

Norton Motorcycles' recent predicament has been unfortunate, to say the least. Recently, we heard about Norton Motorcycles facing winding up over unpaid taxes. The situation spiralled out of control and Norton Motorcycles fell into administration. Now, among the number of potential bidders getting ready to take on Norton Motorcycles includes our own TVS Motor Company as well.

If the reports are to be believed, TVS Motor Company has approached the administrators of Norton Motorcycles, BDO, regarding a potential deal. TVS Motor Company is considered one of the bigger manufacturers in the Asian two-wheeler market. The number of exports is impressive too as the company boasts of a diverse lineup consisting of small scooters and mopeds to entry-level sportsbike, the Apache RR 310.

While the current situation makes the future of the market a little hard to predict, if the deal goes as planned, TVS Motor Company can tap into the lucrative premium market. Norton Motorcycles may be in rough seas at the moment but there is no doubt about the popularity of the brand, not only in the UK but around the world.

Norton Motorcycles fell into administration recently over a series of reports and accounting errors were reported. The firm’s ex-CEO, Stuart Garner, is currently under investigation by the UK pensions regulator for using private pension pots to invest directly into Norton.

Interesting to see how TVS will be able to manage the crisis with the purchase!

Somehow, I don't see the TVS-BMW connect helping the premium segment. I have only seen one BMW G310 (of any variant) on the road. Only once. For KTM, this figure might be well above 60-70.

But, this doesn't mean Norton won't have an impact.. In fact, I believe contrary! See, the kind of impact Bajaj made with KTM, couldn't have ever been made with Kawasaki. Hero also couldn't make much in premium segment with Honda.

Every Indian company needs a foreign relationship(with a premium manufacturer), that is supportive for our environment, like an ideal marriage, sort of.
Norton could well be that to be the next KTM. Fast, reasonable quality and within a good budget.
Now, I know Norton has a history, its an ultra exotic manufacturer, I fondly remember its 588, but a sold company has more liberal standards than a succesful one..
And of couse, it might go like Tata-Jagaur, each working in their own country, but learning does happen anyhow.

Again, this is just my idea. Not necessarily, should it happen.

Norton is more or less dead save for it's name and I don't think TVS should be fishing in murky waters at this time when outlook of entire auto industry is in peril. They should work closely with BMW instead to bring in more variants of 310 or even 250 cc ones for domestic and export market.
