  • Nursing an Obsessive Touring Disorder - how I yielded to the temptation

Planning doesnt work very well (I work in Business Strategy & Planning for a large Corporate )

I received a 'Maternal permit #' at 1:30pm on Sat and was on the road by 2pm along with my riding buddy Dhamu. We headed West without a concrete plan or preparation. With petrol in the tank and some cash, clothing and a South India map as the luggage.

Reached Trichi on sat night, headed to Munnar on Sunday riding through some stunning scenic views. Rode around Munnar and unfortunately lost a sunset to dense fog. Decided to catch my next sunset on Monday sipping tea by the Arabian sea and headed to Kumarakom. After hills and backwaters, decided to spot some wildlife at Thekady on tuesday. The trip would be incomplete without visiting some relatives and friends at Madurai, so visited them all and headed home for a nice sleep on wednesday.

All in all, 1600kms of pure biking fun over 4.5 days...now looking at a serpentine inbox with umpteen deadlines (that ended yesterday).

Next: Wait for a full-blown travelogue coming to a screen in front of you to soothe your next monday morning blues. If not, you know that I m on the road yet again.... : )

leaving you some pics for the meantime.

Dressed for the occasion - enroute to Munnar

Talk about Restaurant ambience - Tall peaks for wallpaper

    Fording on the bridge

Damn - so much water - enroute Top Station

    Relaxing Backwaters - Kumarakoam

On top of the mountains - Kumily

Thekady - Too Touristy for my taste

update : pls see the triplog a few post below.... sorry for the delay!

            Loved It !

@pitbull ... Dude you made my day ! .... I am amazed by your awesome narrating skills and choice of words which best do justice to everything you went through while on this ride ... The words did the job of pictures & like a novel I went on reading it till end with a big smile on my face ... my mind was virtually riding with you and enjoying every bit of it .... thanks a lot for coming up with this detailed and interesting log ... I share the same touring bug as you and would surely like to visit these places but with a proper plan as I am an alien to south india ... will surely like to meet you en-route !

Now please garnish your log with some nice pics .... the teasers have made me anxious !

Ditto situation at my home too

It was a Saturday afternoon in late January, the winter sun made life pleasant as I pussy-footed through the narrow by- lanes of my now unfriendly neighborhood.
            Why unfriendly ?

Its one thing to have a touring bug but what matters is how you overcome it .... you are really very very LUCKY my friend to have such a touring enthusiast as your travel buddy ... Helmets Off to your friendship guys

Hahaha .. very nicely put ... loved it !

            My favorite part !

We later learnt that they were collecting donations to buy a new speed-gun.
            ROFL !

We did not realize it was school-time as we witnessed every bus stop and road side junction filled with kids in uniform perhaps waiting for their morning ride. This contributed to a wonderful and active audience for our ride. They smiled, waved and cheered us as we, with immense pleasure, showed them our biking skills by corner carving, peg-scraping and simply accelerating hard. I am sure we created the first blueprint on the minds of several would-be bikers. I am sure atleast a few would have dreamt that night that they would go touring on bikes. I am sure that some would have mentioned us to someone in their school. I am sure that we made a profound impact!
Surely it must have ... But I hope its a SAFE ONE !

We were hardly excited, infact my excitement index wound down as I sat on the parapet walls, legs hanging loose and looking at the Thekadi Lake spread its Octopussy tentacles into the forests. Does this signify that the octopus is holding onto the last remaining forests? Is this the Octopus named John?
Nice Metaphor there ! .... I am sure its holding on to the last remaining forest thanks to the mining mafia & corrupt politicians !

Being a quasi city-slicker and motorcycle wanderer - I still missed using my ID cards, Emails, Credit Cards (cash is king on the roadas), Laptop, extended mobile conversations, News Papers - I didnt know what were the Nasdaq and Sensex doing? how badly my Share portfolio was faring, the political reshuffles, the unfolding corruption scandals among many things. Life was bliss, exciting and uncertain but not boring.
We share a lot of things mentioned in the above para

The two riders kept riding happily ever after, even after their weddings, with their respective wives riding pillion. This story has no end just as freedom has no boundaries. Will catch you on version 2.0.....

note: This is the first anniversary of our ride...! and the triplog is so delayed....! dont blame my marriage though
Congratulations for coming up with such an engrossing trip log ... waiting impatiently for more ! ... I am your fan sir

            @Mods : Its a beautifully written Log ... deserves a Magazine entry !

pitbull - lovely narrative you have put up. But only so little pictures to go along with it? Hope you put up some more pictures.
OT - you are nursing an Obsessive Touring Disorder & I have a Compulsive Roaming Disorder. Would be fun to ride together!
Compulsive Roaming - it is not a disorder, it is the order of the day!
