BikerZone turns two: The Anniv Ride

The route was 20 KMs off road but we also wanted to make the rest of the journey exciting. So before leaving for the day, our navigator charted out a route to ride on and briefed everyone about it.

                  The Navigator:

We reached Pawalgarh soon and took a left for Kotabagh from here. The roads were good and the heat was intense. The group decided to wait for the others at this place and cool down as well. While some rested under the tree shade, others took a bath in the nearby water stream and a few others went into the wild. They went to nearby dirt tracks, explored and returned to find the others still under the tree shade and in the water stream. After a few minutes of wait the group united and started moving towards Kaladhungi.

                  Some pictures en route:

                  Enroute Kaladhungi:

Once back at the highway, we took a turn towards Nainital and rode on the butter smooth tarmac roads. This was my first visit to Nainital and I felt the incline to be steep in comparison to the roads leading to Simla or Manali. We had our own share of fun in taking those steep curves and were a few KMs before Nainital when I found the group resting under a big tree at the roadside. Everyone was excited. They were bored of riding on plane highways and smooth roads and so were hoping to find some good off road track now.

                  Enroute Nainital:

2 KMs before Nainital a road cuts to left for Pangut and then to Kunjakharak. We took the turn and started riding on. After a couple of KMs the road got patchy and I imagined every head under the helmet to have the same smile as I had but to our dismay, the roads got better again and we rode on them hoping to find an off road section after the next turn.

We reached Pangut but could not find any bad stretch of roads. The group took a halt at the roadside shop to have a couple to tea. The weather had dropped radically since we started the ascend and all of us enjoyed it with a cup of tea, warm sunshine and bakar.

After spending some time, we started towards Kunjakharak which was going to be our halt for the day. The roads were good and weather lovely which made the ride somewhat pleasurable.

                  Enroute Kunjakharak:

Kunjakharak has a FRH and we planned to camp there for the night however the caretaker was drunk by the time we reached and talked gibberish all the time. We tried to persuade him and stay there but his senses did not pick any of the words we said. Disheartened and confused, we started back in a hope to find someplace to stay.

After around 4 KMs on the road back to Pangut, we saw an isolated tourist bunglow with no caretaker or person around. A quick recon was done of the place. Though it was ideal for camping, the only problem was unavailability of water. I so much wished I had bought the jerry cans in Haridwar. Archit had around 10 Ltrs of water in his jerry can and others had around 3 -4 Ltrs of water but it was not enough for a group of 10. We saw some people at a distance and went to enquire about availability of water. They confirmed that a village was nearby with water facility and we can camp there if wanted to.

The whole group moved to the village and found a person to talk to. He was kind enough to give us some space outside his house in the animal shelter. Some of the members along with him cleared the shelter of all the dry grass lying there. We thanked the person and began preparing for the camp again. Camping activity today was much more synchronized and efficient than yesterday and everyone took on one job or the other.

With the tents up and food prepared, we had our own round of bakar and fun over rounds of drinks. During the bakar, we enquired about the ride and how each member felt about the same. Archit got a great amount of bashing from each member as they still had there butts intact and were aching to get some soul-ripping ride. Among all the bashing and criticism, he had a faint smile on his face.

                  Setting the tent:

                  BakarZone:

Soon the topic was forgotten and the bakar started again. At around 12 at night, the group departed to the respective tents, dissatisfied with the ride so far.

Warning: Light hearted people, please refrain.

We woke up to a beautiful view of the valley right in front of us. Mornings like these make you want more out of your life and live your life to the full and the same feeling rolled across the group. Soon, we all got busy with our daily chores and then into our respective jobs. While Saurabh, Sandeep got busy with breakfast preparation, I along with Abhineet started packing the tents and sleeping bags. Others carried luggage to the motorcycles and BikerZone In-House Mechanics Lucky and Ravi checked the motorcycles for minor repairs.

It has been an hour since and the roads were somehow getting shorter in width. What started with a six feet road as now of about 4 feet but still was ride -able. I was among the last two of the group and at a decent distance from the rider in front due to the condition of the roads. But then I saw everyone halted at a turn and it seemed as if they were analyzing the turn. I could not understand the reason for the same till the time I reached at the turn.

It was the first of many hindrances to come our way and probably one of the easiest too. From here on, what followed was something we would never forget in our entire respective lives. It was something which will inspire us to overcome toughest of terrains, in the life to come. I will now let pictures show the real feel of what I am trying to say.

We reached Kotabagh at 5:30 in the evening. Right before hitting the highway, we passed through a village where a few people on Tractor stopped us and enquired about the ride.

                        Excerpt from the interaction:

Villager: Saab, kaha se aa rahe ho? (Sir, where are you coming from?)
                        Us: Pangut se. (From Pangut.)
VillagerUs: Nahin, highway se nahin aae. Yahin se aa rahe hain. (No, we did not take the highway. We took this route only.)
VillagerUs: We smiled, waved them good bye and moved forward.

Some of us wanted to camp today as well while others were in no mood to. However, Archit thought of going to Kotabagh and camping there for the night. We reached Ramnagar at 7 in the evening and took the route to Kotabagh. While others went ahead, we stayed back to collect our supply of drinks and other things.

I along with Abhineet, Saurabh and Akaram were riding to Kotabagh when Saurabh raced ahead and gestured to stop. I did the same. He told me that the group was stopped at the check post as no two -wheeler is allowed inside the park. So we waited for the rest of the group and left for Ramnagar after regrouping.

The biggest issue at Ramnagar was to find decent rooms for a group of nine with private parking spot in the hotel. After around half hour of enquiries, we found a good budget hotel with the safest parking we could imagine.
The group freshened up and regrouped for some amazing Bakar over rounds of refreshing drinks.

Here is a short video of the ride..
