  • Second hand bike suggestions ZMA/RTR/Uni/Pulsar

    Hello Everyone,

I recently shifted to Chennai, which would be my residence for the next couple of years or so. And my office being about 15kms away from my residence, I need a bike for commuting. I have a budget of about 40k, and certainly do not wish to exceed that. I would also be upgrading a few aftermarket parts, and hence the limit of 40k. My choices are :

Karizma - Powerful, has the Honda engine, and is backed by Hero Honda sales and service. I think, it has an engine which can last longer than most other bikes (Indian makes).
RTR (160 or 180) - This is because I just love the hooligan nature of the bike. I have no idea for how many kms its engine would be good enough, but I personally think that the Suzuki Fiero had the best engine build.
Unicorn - Again, the only reason is the Honda engine. Spares are a bit costly, but it is quite reliable.
Pulsar - Easily available, and easily disposable. This would be my last choice.

I also checked the net and found a few options :
SlNo. Bike Mfg Year Kms Price
    1 Karizma Aug2007 42000 44,000
    2 Karizma 2006 7000 50,000
    3 Karizma 2006 36000 42,000
    4 Karizma 2008 35000 47,000
    5 RTR 160 May 2008 14000 50,000
    6 RTR 160 2007 25000 42,000
    7 Apache 2008 22000 44,000
    8 RTR 160 2008 17000 40,000
    9 Unicorn 2008 25000 45,000
    10 Unicorn 2007 5000 45,000
    11 Pulsar150 Feb2010 1200 53,000

Please suggest me which bike to go for, and also the pros and cons. Owners can surely have a better idea of the bike than someone like me who has ridden all these bikes, but has no idea about maintenance in the long run. Also indicate the approximate prices for the bike that you are suggesting.
My primary concern is a good resale value (which in turn translates to well maintained with all legal documents in perfect condition).

Only the price of the karizma seems ok rest are not deserving so high price. 2008 RTR can be had here for not more than Rs 35000 and Unicorn will be near Rs 32000.
Never upgrade without getting your basics RIGHT.

All the prices are over-rated, except Pulsar 2010, I find it the best buy from the lot when considering about model and year.

Thanks for replying abhi. But, when I sell this bike after a year, though it would not be more than 1 year, it would be a 3rd hand bike. This alone would decrease the asking price of the bike. And hence, I would be in a loss.... If you have any points to the contrary, enlighten me...

Yup, you are right. For 1 year, you should not look for a bike more than 30-35K. A fine maintained ZMA 2005-06 should not cost more than 32K in my dictionary.

guys, where can you get 2008 RTR for 35k??

              Not everybody lives in Delhi!!

Prices of bikes are significantly higher, here in the south.

@OP: Go for a karizma which is less used. Good bang for buck.

@abhi : Well, 32k seems a very sweeet price for the ZMA . And it almost sounds too good to be true. But, rarely would anyone sell his ZMA for such a low price, unless it is badly maintained.

@rng : Even I feel the same... Lemme try and find out for how much the owner is willing to part his bike...

@everyone : Can someone give me some idea about the depreciation of the price of the bike starting from the first year of ownership? (In terms of percentage). That way, I can judge the approximate price of the bike... Isn't the same technique used by insurance providers?? They must give an approximate value of the bike on which they would provide insurance.. Right??

Tad high still. An RTR does not has that much value especially a 2008. Should cost between 30-35K Really, my friend has recently purchased a 2008 model, 12K kms for 32000rs only.

40k for 2008 RTR seems decent deal.Try to bring it down to 37-38 level.
