  • Commuter bike upgrade for short height rider

My current ride is a Hero Honda CD Deluxe which is also my first bike and had learnt riding on this. It has been serving me well for the past 2 years and I have maintained it in pristine condition and completed 17,000 trouble free kilometers. My daily commute to and fro is approximately 40 - 50 kms in heavy Mumbai traffic and non peak hour short highway rides.

Sometimes I also go on the close outskirts of the city which is a 100 km journey in total.

The main problem that I am facing on the CD Deluxe is its harsh and stiff ride quality. Every bump and pothole is filtered over to the body and I experience immense tension on the shoulders, lower back and mainly unbearable pain on the tail bone. I am writing this post a day prior of visiting the doctor as it is uncomfortable to ride the bike now.

Riding position and ergonomics is definitely comfortable due to its upright stance and easy to use nature respectively.

My main concern is my height. I am 5'3" and weigh 54 kilos. I can easily ride many bikes but not exactly comfortably or easily on bikes with big tanks as let me admit it applies too much pressure on the crotch. Once in a while it is fine to ride slightly taller bikes like the Unicorn or Hunk which have amazing suspension, but I am not confident for my daily commutes.

There is no reason for me to be disappointed with my current bike but if I continue riding I will strain and damage my back prematurely. I am in my early twenties.

In a nutshell I wish to retain the same positive aspects of the CD deluxe like and also want these factors on my next upgrade :-

    • Seat height should not be very high as I am not exactly tall and should translate to better handling.
    • Good F.E. - 60 kpl +
    • Overall trouble free ownership and reliability, intend to keep for 5 - 6 years
    • Good ride quality
    • 100 cc bike is adequate for my needs. Doesn't feel underpowered.
    • Should be a little stylish and not plain vanilla like the Splendor or CD Deluxe

I am not considering Bajaj and TVS bikes and will stick to Hero or Honda only for their after sales and overall long lasting reliability.

I am very keen on purchasing a Hero Passion Pro.

Considering CB Twister but have read about some problems which makes me skeptical.

    • I must inform that I intend to purchase a used bike ( 6 months - 1.5 year old) so that I can upgrade with minimal cost after selling my existing bike. So I have to keep in mind the initial expenditures if I go the second hand route.

    • I am confused whether I should retain my existing bike and modify the shock absorbers instead of selling a bike on which I am facing zero issues and not that old. However I dislike tampering with the stock factory setup of the bike and hence this decision.

Suggestions and feedback are appreciated as my health is at risk.

I have been a silent reader on X Bhp. And have read the thread on a fellow member purchasing a Passion Pro over the CD Deluxe solely over the ride quality.

    Thank you!

You should check Yamaha SZ-R. Its height is also not too much. And being a 150cc, would be more helpful in a 40km+ commute. But the mileage would be around 45-50 something.

Passion Pro is also there with tested and proven results. There are many options, let the members comment.

      Ride safe and have fun.

Looking forward to know which bike you will finalize.

Somehow none of the Hero models made it to my list of shortlisted bikes.

Since you're narrowed your search among Hero and Honda bikes and having test ridden Yuga, I can say it's smooth but expensive.

The Dream series from Honda should be an worthy upgrade for you for your daily commute. And Hayate - though not sold in great numbers, is a very good commuter with good low end torque.
You can also look for an used Shine/YBR for the ride quality while considering a 2nd hand bike. Though I'd suggest not to go for a 2nd hand bike as you never know the condition of the bike. It's your health which is at stake.

Re: Commuter bike upgrade for short height rider

              Hello all.

Apologies for the permanently delayed reply.
I am still trying to understand the nuances of xBHP and could not login in numerous attempts as I had forgotten my password. Today, more than 8 - 9 months of posting my query and purchasing my bike, I found it out written in a diary.
Hence the need to respond and reply.

A sincere thank you to all the xBHPians who have given their suggestions in helping me purchase my bike.

Initially I did search for some nearly used FZs but they were poorly maintained and hence I shelved the idea of purchasing used.
More so I am a sort of cleanliness freak who prefers to wax and keep my bike neat, scratch less and clean.

I did consider Twister but the dealer didn't stock owing to poor demand and the Dream Series though reliable where bordering to plain jane looks which didn't appeal me. Sticking to Hero was the safest bet.

So my father who was anyway keen to buy me new asked me to stop scouting for any used bikes as I had wasted enough time.

I had decided on purchasing a Hero Passion but ultimately chose the Hero Passion X Pro which apart from the name does not share much in common with its predecessor.
I purchased the same soon after Diwali in October, 2014. And have already clocked 9,700 kms since. Which I feel is a lot for something in 6 months.

Though I must admit at the price point it was hovering well into the 125 cc segment and even base 150 cc versions of rival companies.
I chose to stick to 110 cc X Pro as it would give me the best FE and lower running costs to the stingy student in me who still relies on father's pocket money. (atleast till the near future)

Will post my review that I had wanted to post here but ultimately had done in various other forums due to my lackadaisical nature of having a complicated password for xBHP.
Henceforth I shall be a more regular member as I am more of a biker and feel suffocated in a car.

Will provide a detailed review soon.
