• Best Touring Bike under 3Lacs India

Dear all,

This is Santhosh. I have been a silent user reading the endless discussions and touring logs. And i have enjoyed All of them.

Now it is my turn to ask a question and get into Action. Currently I have GS150R and till now my main use would be Home - Office commuting.
However, I would like to move up from 150CC and also from Home - Office commuting to touring as well. So I am looking for a Bike more than 250CC with the budget of 3Lacs.

One of the basic/main requirement for me with the new bike is Pillion comfort and Riding position during long rides(read more than 400Kms one way).
And also second most important aspect would be safety. Preferably with ABS but not mandatory if bike has good progressive brakes. (I did have couple of ouch/fall moments with the sudden braking and wheels getting locked up with GS150R)

Even though I have couple of bikes in my mind I do not want this discussion go into on those couple of bikes alone.

Request your inputs. I am ok to wait till Early part of next year (only if there is some confirmed news about upgrade / new bikes)

Thanks in advance.

1. CBR 250R ABS - 249cc only - rest of the requirements are fulfilled.
2. Mahindra Mojo - above 250cc but poor pillion comfort.
3. Duke 390 - Please no! No tank range and very bad pillion seat.
Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Thanks a lot for the quick approval.
On CBR250 : How is the riding position of CBR 250R ABS as it looks like sports bike. I read that it is comfortable but is it as comfortable as other street bikes? E.g. Mojo
Also isn't it bit old and i will be having the risk of getting the upgrade soon once I get a new one?

On Mojo: can we change the pillion seat somehow and make it comfortable?

On D390: Agreed.

CBR 250R has a very comfortable stance. It's not upright like the Mojo but it isn't as aggressive as the R15 either. It's right in between.
So far I don't see a replacement landing our shores in the next 6 months unless Honda decides to surprise us.

Mojo seat modification would be a DIY as of now.

I dont know why, but all the long tours these days seem to be done on Benelli TNT 300s. But all solo, though.

Anyways, since you want pillion comfort, look at the Hyosung aquilla 250.

Or a Duke 390, with a top box like this http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/attachme...809_154746.jpg.
All you need to do is add some foam, and viola, you have luggage as well as a backrest.

Then you have the CBR250, just dont expect it to be very comfortable for the pillion.

PS: Whats your opinion on the RE stable?

Re: Best Touring Bike under 3Lacs India

I would suggest the upcoming TNT 25 from benelli which is said to be launched Nov 25. From the review (I think powerdrift) it's almost the same as the CBR 250R in specs. It's quite a stunner in looks for a street. You get wide handlebars and a proper pillion seat. Price should be also dearer.

Among the lot suggested by Divya Sharan I would rate
1. CBR 250R
2. KTM Duke 390
3. Mahindra Mojo

I haven't ridden the Mojo yet but based on the service, reliability, availability of spares and after market accessories I would not come to a conclusion of choosing that as of now. That's why it's down in the last.
Ride Safe!

Cheers,
Maneesh S

Thanks for your inputs guys. I really appreciate it.

Wow that's nice addition to the D390. Do you have any other link to the post which shows the seat modification?

Even though I like the REs I feel I don't consider my heart goes with that. And all those niggles and After sales issues we read worries me.
I really like the Benelli , but tnt300 priced on bit higher side and no-ABS for that price. Anyone knows about the pillion comfort during long rides?

Thanks.

That D390 is from this guy's thread. Drop him a PM. ------------> http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/who-you/...-colombia.html

Another D390 jugaad, alongwith, bottle holders (for fuel? or for gatorade?), more foam on the seats both rider and pillion, and a windscreen. https://scontent-sin1-1.xx.fbcdn.net...4d&oe=565C0503

CBR 250R ticks all your boxes. If you want more power Duke 390 but more than the rear seat your partner should be wary of the power delivery.

I have the GS150R and I have the exact same problem. If the GW250 was around, I'd have picked it up(it was low on bhp though).
I'd say if you are tall(about 6') go for the Mojo or else go for the CBR. I love the power on the Duke 390 but hate everything else when it comes to touring.
I did a testride of the Mojo with my wife. From a touring prespective, I loved averything about the bike except the size of the pillion seat. It is comfortable to sit but no space to move around, a bit bigger seat would have made it on par with the GS150's pillion. I saw photos of Mahindra accessories for touring at the Showroom. That included saddlebags and a carrier that could be fit on the bike after removing the grabrail. ABS is missing though.
With great Power(and Torque) comes great responsibility.

I am 5'7" and i havent tried Mojo or CBR. I have tried D390 once and I agree on the power delivery. It is bit of mad rush(ofcource coming from 14bhp of GS150) of power and it actually very exciting bike.
However, for the touring perspective it is bit on harsh side(it is just my opinion, sorry if I am wrong). And i believe other bikes like Mojo and CBR would be better for touring.

Is there any news about Mojo getting ABS? I read somewhere that Mojo ABS version is being tested.
honda: Please bring CBR300 soon. Are you listening?

Thanks,

Hi Santosh, I recently got a Ninja 300. It is a very flexible and comfortable bike. The seating position is really spot on for any height and it can be ridden econo like a splendor, smooth and nonintimidating. With a few revs dialled in almost as rabid as a Duke 390. It has a huge rev range.... from 3k to 13k is ridable all through.
Lots of points for securing luggage, decent range with a huge tank and reasonable mileage, low compression engine that would be fine with all kinds of fuel... Good for touring
The best part is the softest clutch that I have ever experienced... Better even than the 100cc bikes.
The only problem is that it doesn't seem value for money and the pillion seat may not be liked by all.

Yeah. My one of the main requirement is pillion comfort. As I will be accompanied by my better half on long rides.
And also Ninja 300 is bit out range for my budget.
I like TNT302 very much, even though it is bit out of budget as well.

Thanks

In my opinion, given your budgetary constraints, the ONLY bikes which fit your MAIN requirement are:

Bajaj Avenger 220
RE Thunderbird

(in that order)

I personally do not like RE, but considering that pillion comfort is important to you, it is on of the options.

All the bikes mentioned earlier, from the duke to the CBR 250, are very capable bikes, but your requirement removes all of them from consideration. 400 km with a pillion rider on any of these bikes will be painful for the pillion's bum and back, and your wrists.

You can try Bajaj RS 200 with ABS . It is really good bike. With comfort and good riding quality . Or if you can wait there 2 more bikes from Bajaj yet to launch CS 400 and RS 400 CC bikes . both comes with ABS and Metzler tyres .
