  • Suggest Scooter - Comfort & Storage & 50KM daily use

    Hi Friends,

I would like to buy a Scooter which would be a second vehicle to my existing super splendor bike. The earlier vehicles which we owned and sold out were Bajaj M-50, Bajaj Sunny & TVS Scooty. TVS Scooty and Bajaj Sunny did a good job of a scooter whenever we required to use it. I had bought cyclinders easily by keeping it in front in TVS Scooty.

But nowadays i find that scooters dont have that much of a leg space, a comfortable leg space would mean using the scooter to conveniently place a cyclinder or water can in times of need.

Looking for a scooter with good leg space, storage space and reliability. Daily use Mon-Fri is 50 Km per day. Office is one way 25 Kms and most road is main arterial roads / smooth roads.

I found the age old tradition of going with the tried and tested fruitful when i bought my super splendor in 2006 and till now apart from regular service and one rebore work which happened due to incompetent servicing persons, i never had to change any other components of the bike .

Going by the research which I did on scooters have shortlisted on the following:

    1) Honda Activa - Tried and tested and full metal body (advertised)

    2) TVS Jupiter - For metal body, gas charged suspensions, large tyres.

and the third one which is told by my colleague is mahindra gusto , he is pretty impressed by it. I saw the features and do like the features esp seat adjustment and large ground clearance along with large front tyres.

So please help me to finalize a scooter. Plan to take a decision and buy in coming weeks.

    Query Approved

Personally i have quite liked the Jupiter. You should check out the Maestro Edge as well.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Jupiter is super comfortable and great in every way.

Gusto is loaded with features but the service reliability from Mahindra is something to be worried.

Maestro edge looks good. Don't know why they have a smaller rear tyre? 12" front 10" rear if I'm not wrong.

OT: From reliable sources, after the last Honda dealership meet, I heard that there is a new version of activa with telescopic forks coming up by 2016. Should be definitely good.

I live in metro city chennai wherein there are many dealers / service centres. Also mahindra is a trusted brand in jeeps and their engines are beast and used in many commercial vehicles, hence assumed that they would have done a good job for their two wheeler segment also. Also one thing to ponder over is I didnt seem to notice any gusto on the roads, in short i havent noticed much mahindra two wheelers on roads. Still thanks for your inputs. Might do a test drive at a dealer and know more information.

Well I understand that service won't be problem in chennai. But then, it doesn't top the sales chart or say it's not even in the top competition. So what if Mahindra stop the production sooner or later? What abt the spare parts availability then? That's my concern. If you are planning to keep the scooter for a long run I would suggest you to go with other reputed brands like TVS or Honda.

Very good point, i totally forgot about this. There are cases wherein companies have stopped production of certain vehicles leaving owners in ditch for spares and maintenances. I surely plan to keep the vehicle for a long long time. Hence will try to compare within the market leaders Honda, TVS.

              Date: 02/01/2016 update

Took test drive of tvs jupiter and mahindra gusto.

Rode both vehicles on internal roads suspension felt ok.
Tvs jupiter: tvs showroom.was big and had lots of vehicles for service and sales. The person could not provide good attention to me. They already have a huge customer database and were not that much attentive.

The person told that for jupiter we have to fit the mobile charging socket from outside only and tvs does not fit it. They only make the provision of socket. When asked about warranty getting void if i fix socket from outside he told that it wont get void. The person himself didnt knew most features of jupiter / wego. Wego has fully digital speedo which in case of failures would need to change whole ic unit. Jupiter has the pass switch and the pass switch works when the headlight is at high beam in night so it means if you want to use pass switch in night it will go from dipper to upper and then to pass. Pass is full dc and tail lights are led. Person was not that attentive. Gave quote of 62.5k all incl of accessories (guard)

Then went to mahindra showroom. It was small showroom and didnt had any customers but people came to collect rc books. Took test drive of gusto and saw its features. Technician was attentive and gave full attention but he too didnt knew much features of gusto. Gave quote of 64k for the fully loaded version with accessories guard and number plate and leg rest. Weird that number plates and leg rests are not mandatory in any mahindra two wheeler and customer has to get it seperately. Seat adjust feature is good but no pass light is there and wheels are 12 inch but no alloy. Pilot lamps are led cool white and on full dc can be used as daylight lamps. Find me feature doesnt seem practical for me as i know where i park my bike.

Confused as to go with jupiter where co is reliable but service centre / sales is full of customers so doubt as to whether will i get good service or not. Both showrooms didnt have any dedicated vehicle for test drive. And speedos of test drive vehicle were disabled thus having possibility of selling a test drive vehicle to customer. Plan to write to mahindra and tvs to check the showrooms and make mandatory demo / test vehicle decals on all test vehicles.

Well, I wouldn't worry much about a service for tvs scooters cuz they can be serviced by most mechanics around the city. If you are not satisfied with the tvs authorised svc then once the warranty period is over you can take it to a mechanic of your choice. Since you like both vehicles just go by your instinct. Don't bother much. 😉

Btb you should also try the Maestro edge and Activa 125.

Among the scooters suggested by you I'd suggest you Jupiter for its larger wheelbase and good ergonomics.
You can also have a look at Suzuki Swish. Has a 125cc heart!

Re: Suggest Scooter - Comfort & Storage & 50KM daily use

Happy and Satisfied user of TVS Jupiter.

I have had the bike for 6 months now and till date there has been no problem at all. The mileage started from 45 and after 3 services its up to 52 (the max that i got is 52 with mostly city riding). Apart from service consumables, oil changing, petrol and new number plate (stylish) I have not spent a single paisa more on it.

The engine is butter smooth at 40 to 60 kmph and believe me its really silky smooth with excellent pickup and handling. The bigger tyres are a huge advantage with telescopic suspension in the front. Tubeless tyres, external fuel filler cap, etc make this scooter real value for money.

Apart from the full guard I did not take any other accessory hence my total on road cost came up to Rs. 60,000/- Mumbai.

This is TVS's first product that is doing very very well and they deserve it as its better than Activa (no offence meant to Activa users)

Go for it sir, its a great product.

I had totally forgotten about the purchase of a new scooter, i keep on making plans and keep on postponing them. Rarely do follow a plan. Again after comparison found TVS Jupiter to be the best suitable for me for the telescopic suspension , alloy wheels, tubeless tyres.

Attitude of the dealers is just like we dont care, but since i had decided to go with TVS and this was the nearest dealer I went and got a revised quote for around 64400/- incl some flag day fees for RTO, since i was going to pay in cash asked for a discount and all he could give is the 400 rs and made it round 64000/- (with the accessories of full guard and mat) . I wanted to use my credit card so that i can get some good points on it, but that useless dealer had a 2% service charge on card swiping which means again an amount of 1000 odd will go waste, decided to leave the credit card swiping and withdrew cash from bank to purchase @ 64000. Booked vehicle yesterday for delivery on friday evening / sat morning.

Yesterday while booking insisted the person to go for todays registration and he did register my vehicle in todays registration and asked him to give today itself. He arranged delivery and i went and got my delivery. Tomorrow i will get the number and after one month will get the RC book. 11 May is my bday and on 10 may 2006 i bought my first bike hero honda super splendor which still is running well and on 11 may 2016 i booked tvs jupiter and got it delivered on 12 may 2016 (ie. today) but not happy with some things like:

When i bought my hero honda super splendor on 10 may 2016 the vehicle had a mfg date of may 2006, but my TVS jupiter has mfg / testing date of 01 mar 2016 and i booked and got it on 12 may 2016, so not happy, yesterday when i went to their godown to see colors i saw tvs jupiters with mfg dates of 10/04/2016 and was expecting my bike to be mfg in apr 2016 but tht person told they will do first in first out of vehicles.

Another thing i overlooked is that all TVS vehicles come with the lead acid batteries and not sealed mf batteries. The type is flooded which requires maintenance and water top ups. Tool kit doesnt contain spark plug cleaning tools just a screwdriver and a spanner, when asked about spark plug tool the person told that spark plug cleaning / replacement is to be done by service centre persons which is shitty to know and they dont give spark plug tools in tool kits nowadays.

overall since from past 10 years i am accustomed to driving my bike having an odd feeling while driving this scooter. It will take some time for me to get adjusted to this scooter. Will note the fuel filling details so that i can calculate the average of vehicle and check the performance of vehicle.
