  • Best bike under 3 lacs

    Hey fellow readers,

I am planning to buy a naked bike and I can't wrap my head around these five bikes that I have shortlisted based on my experiences of riding them. I was hoping that this community will help me in finding the right bike.

    Meet the competitors:

    1. Duke 200 - This is the first bike I rode (back in 2013) after a long break. Instantly loved it! The engine loves to pull, and I enjoyed the lovely design - until they changed it with the BS6 update. Nevertheless, I think I can live with it since the bike is rather unchanged (specs wise).

    2. Duke 250 - Now, this bike wasn't in the list for a very long time until I watched PowerDrift's (Dominar vs Duke 250) review. It does check all the boxes but I'm not sure if the bike is all that peppy like the Duke 200. With the new BS6 paint scheme, it is a looker though.. and it does fit the budget of 2.5 lacs. I did see mixed reactions. I'm not sure if that is ironed out.

    3. Dominar 400 - What can I say about this bike? The best VFM bike. I was literally convinced that I'm going to buy this bike until I read some ownership reviews about the rear brake being ineffective. Some owners had issues with inexperience folks at Bajaj service centers (or rather Bajaj technicians being clueless about certain issues). The rusty exhaust pipe below the radiator is a sore-thumb.

    4. KTM Duke 390 - I don't have much to say about the Duke 390. It is frantic for sure. I have ridden (my friend's bike) in city traffic. It seemed like a great bike. If I'm not mistaken, it is an expensive bike to maintain. I think it does a great job while touring.

    5. Interceptor 650 - Pound for pound, this was the best bike I've ridden in a while. The first time I rode this bike, I was a novice rider and I had never ridden anything beyond 200cc. They way I felt when I was riding this bike reminded me why I enjoy riding. Of course, I have become a bit mature handling bigger capacity bikes, I think the Interceptor is a go-to bike for effortless riding. In an ideal world, I would have bought this bike, but it has some issues that is a bit of a concern like, seats, suspensions bottom out in some potholes, incorrect fuel readings, the footpeg positions, it doesn't have tubeless tyres etc.

At this point, you might realize that I am nitpicking, but you see I have to choose between my mind and my heart. T
he reason why I want to buy the bike is for occasional Friday Office commutes (62 kms), weekend city & highway rides. My ideal budget is 2.5 lacs, but if required I can pull the hair from my head and take it to 3 lacs.

Something which is crucial for me is:
    1. (Seat) comfort and/or riding comfort.
    2. Should have ample torque to keep me engaged & cruise comfortably at highway speeds like 120+.
    3. Maintenance costs should be reasonable.
    4. Mileage around 25+ (or more) should be alright.

It would be nice to hear from you.

    Many thanks,
    - seizer

Interceptor will be ideal bike for you. Just get the seats modified for comfort and install puncture proof tyre conversion liquid like formula x .

But pillion comfort will be less because of odd placement of the pillion footpegs. Otherwise you can checkout both the Dominar 400 and Dominar 250. D250 has arrived in showrooms. Dukes have hard suspension and poor comfort as compared to Domi duos.

      Thanks.

I will not comment on the other bikes listed by you as I have not ridden any of them, but my one year experience with the interceptor has been fabulous.
        1) The seat can be very easily modified, i still use the stock seat.
        2) The foot pegs haven't been a concern for me, took a couple of days to get used to them.
        3) Thankfully, my fuel gauge has been very consistent, predictable and accurate.
        4) Torque will always be adequate. The bike is rock steady even at highway speeds.
        5) Service costs have been below Rs. 3000 with service interval of 10000 kms / one year.
        6) Mileage in city traffic has been consistently between 23 and 23.5 kmpl and around 27.5 - 28 on highway runs.
        7) The biggest concern has been pillion comfort as the pillion foot pegs are not comfortably placed.

I am still as eager to get on my bike as i was on the day I got it. Even i had started with a budget of 2.5 lakhs, but the extra money spent on the Interceptor was definitely worth it!

Re: Best bike under 3 lacs

Let me tell you about the pros of interceptor in points

          1. the bike has a fantastic engine which is vibe free and revv happy, there's enough power for overtakes and fun

          2. the brakes are very good with a very sharp bite, brembo ones

          3. The build quality is very good and bike is very solid, it will last till your grandkids. The bike is handsome did i tell you that?

          4. The weight of the bike helps in highway rides as bike remains plated when big vehicles overtake you.

          5. Special treatment is given at the service center for the 650 Twins

          6. Service interval is 1 year or 10,000 kms and it costs 2500rs, which is cheaper considering it's 650 cc

          7. I own the continental gt 650 for the last 7 months so i can vouch for all these points and there are many positive reviews globally as well.

          8. Good fuel economy considering the power and the engine, i got 33 kmpl on highway trip, the best till date, normally on highways i get around 30 kmpl, speeds around 100-120. In city it's around 25 kmpl, the worst was 20kmpl in bumper to bumper conditions.

Olx is full of interceptors now, having mileage from 2000 kms to 10,000 kms, quoting prices 50,000₹ less than the showroom price, the conditions are brand new as it's a new bike, i think you should get a used one, even i regret buying a new one now. Noting happens to a bike in a year or 4-5k kms, the money you save will be used for fuel.
          Peace

Re: Best bike under 3 lacs

I think it's either the Domi 400 or Interceptor 650 for you.

All bikes will have some niggles and some issues which can be lived with or fixed. Different owners may have different issues. Known issues are fine. You know what you getting into and aware of it. Brakes of Dominar, seat of Interceptor etc etc are known niggles and can be managed. Don't let these things block your purchase.

If rear braking is non-negotiable for you, look at Interceptor. If you can't do without tubeless tires, then look elsewhere.

            Cheers mate!!

Yeah, I forgot to mention about the footpegs. Anyway, I'm not planning on accommodating a pillion so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm going to look into Formula X. Thanks for letting me know!

              Interesting!
I have another question, how is the headlight "throw" in the real world? Is it adequate in the city/highway?

Wise words! I'm going to keep that in mind - work the finances and take a call.
However, I will be sure to let you know when I make the purchase.

It is adequate in City conditions. Have not had any opportunity to test it on Highway.

Re: Best bike under 3 lacs

Let me tell you my reasons for picking the 250 Duke.
I too was given a similar distance to test ride the Dominar, Int 650 and 250 Duke. But the moment I sat on the Duke, its ergonomics fitted so well that in my mind that was it. I’m of a little slim stature, and the Duke is really compact around the thighs and the handlebar is well within reach for me. There was a sense that this motorcycle was designed for me also not like other motorcycles that made me feel like I’m riding someone else’s bike. Seat height seemed high on paper but very manageable in real world. It also has that fun nature that I expect from motorcycles.
Second reason was the spares. The spares are quite reasonable and are not difficult to source either.
Another reason for selecting the KTM was the support. A lot of issues that could happen to the Dukes are already covered on the various 200, 250, 390 forums here & abroad. Lot of videos are up online of different issues and troubleshooting. Plus KTM also gives a detailed owner’s manual & repair manual online. So that’s a rich amount of support for an engine that has been around roughly since 2013.
What I like about the 250? Power (Subjective), handling (too good, it’ll always excite you), ergonomics (again subjective), suspension (very nice and supple), braking (not the best feel but powerful enough), pleasing character (nice balance between the frantic 200 & the mental 390).
What I don’t like much? Petty things like the exhaust note is a bit too muted and RPMs are too tiny on the display
Seat comfort: No complaints at all for the rider; decent enough torque with a kick from 5k RPM onwards till about 9K that is engaging, nice to cruise at 90, 100, 110; spares and consumables are quite reasonable; fuel efficiency I get is around 34 kmpl.

I cannot suggest you any motorcycle. Test ride (or rent if you like) all the motorcycles you have shortlisted and pick the one that clicks in your mind. In reality, cost of the motorcycle, value for money, discounts, looks (for some maybe), support, all these are just secondary. They fade once you own the motorcycle you like and its shortcomings? They won’t bother you much.

Re: Best bike under 3 lacs

You have to test drive and feel the bike yourself, final decision is upto you.
The light throw is okay for city use, you can upgrade at very nominal rates, there are leds, aux lights, fog lights and what not available at very cheap rates
                    Peace

I am upgrading from an FZ25 to a more powerful bike and as mentioned in this thread, I have the similar confusions with the choice. I have sorted out on Int 650, Dominar 400 2020.
Along with the mentioned necessities in this thread, I am also trying to find the better commuter among these two, since this will be my only bike and will have to use it for office commute for 10KM daily and city rides for other works.

Can someone give some suggestion on this, regarding the commute ability of these two bikes.

Both of them are good with commute but the engine of interceptor is more refined and vibration free, the brakes are good , well but it costs more as well. On paper the Interceptor weighs more but while on move you don't feel the difference, you get accustomed to the weight in a few days.

If you have the budget go for interceptor, the bike is in a whole different league, take test drives and see for yourself.

One tip, check your olx for interceptor, there might be some mint condition ones with very less odo and you'll be able to save a lot by going this route.
                          Peace

Thanks. I got a call from RE and planning to do a test ride once the lockdown is over. They have agreed for exchange offer as well. Lets see how it goes.
