Default Cleaning petrol filter for RX135

Hi

I have been cleaning the carb silencer and spark plug regularly to keep the engine in good condition so it improves performance.

However, I did not think of the petrol filter just beneath the fuel tank. I don't remember ever cleaning the filter when I originally bought the bike back in 1998. Wondering What if it is filled with dirt over the years?

Not sure if I could leave it as is or proceed cleaning the petrol filter.

How do I proceed cleaning the filter?
What material does it contain?
Is this something which should be cleaned at regular period of time?

Please share your thoughts...................

Assuming you do not have an owner's handbook, this is what is given:-
  1. Turn the fuel cock lever to 'off' position.
  2. Remove filter from line, remove screw at bottom.
  3. Put in petrol from "inlet" and let sediment be drained along with the petrol from the screw hole, (keeping 'outlet' of filter closed).
According to owners handbook one is supposed to do it every 3,000kms.

A clean fuel filter goes a long way in improving fuel flow to the carburettor... I found it the hard way on my previous bike a RX100. The fuel flow line was choked due to lot of muck in the filter.

Buying a new petrol tap makes sense rather than cleaning, it costs less than 100/-

@ Psycho - By changing the petrol tap, would not need to clean the petrol filter? Can't make sense. Explain please.

changing the petrol tap frequently can cause leaks to the tank. The filter comes out by opening up the bottom of the tap.

you guys are talking of two different fuel filters.

there is one which sits inside the fuel tank as a part of the fuel tap. that one dies not require cleaning as it sits in a sloshing pool of petrol. you clean / replace it only when you clean the fueltank.

the other one is a small aftermarket one sitting on the fuel line. you dont actually need to clean it. you can chuck it away and get a new one every 6 months. costs about 15~20 rupees. make sure of the direction of flow when you put in a new one.

cheers
