i clean it every 6mnth by blowing air through the outlet pipe and running some petrol through it. my bike runs 10k+ km in 6 months so i clean it in 6 month.

Assuming you do not have an owner's handbook, this is what is given:-

Turn the fuel cock lever to 'off' position.
Remove filter from line, remove screw at bottom.
Put in petrol from "inlet" and let sediment be drained along with the petrol from the screw hole, (keeping 'outlet' of filter closed).

According to owners handbook one is supposed to do it every 3,000kms.

A clean fuel filter goes a long way in improving fuel flow to the carburettor... I found it the hard way on my previous bike a RX100. The fuel flow line was choked due to lot of muck in the filter.

Buying a new petrol tap makes sense rather than cleaning, it costs less than 100/-

@ Psycho - By changing the petrol tap, would not need to clean the petrol filter? Can't make sense. Explain please.

changing the petrol tap frequently can cause leaks to the tank. The filter comes out by opening up the bottom of the tap.

you guys are talking of two different fuel filters.

there is one which sits inside the fuel tank as a part of the fuel tap. that one dies not require cleaning as it sits in a sloshing pool of petrol. you clean / replace it only when you clean the fueltank.

the other one is a small aftermarket one sitting on the fuel line. you dont actually need to clean it. you can chuck it away and get a new one every 6 months. costs about 15~20 rupees. make sure of the direction of flow when you put in a new one.

If u r asking for the outer fuel filter than why u r doing this hassle.

Just buy a new one from YAMAHA . It only costs Rs. 38/-

I got new petrol filter from Yamaha yesterday and fixed it. It was priced at 40/-

Also, replaced the existing petrol tube with new one. The Original Yamaha petrol tube costs 12/-
