        Chennai-Nellore-Ongole-Chilkulurpet-Narsaraopet-Karempudi-Macherala-Sagar-Hyderabad.

This will be the best route with GQ upto Chilkulurpet, need to take left over there & continue on State highways.
        Give way to trains.

I thought I'll gather complete info & then post, but then , here's what I found from guys who've experienced in this route
          1. Obvious NH5 from Chennai to Vijayawada & from Vijayawada to Hyderabad. This is "the" longest & the best among all the routes.

          2. The second is from Chennai via NH5 & take a diversion before Korisapadu (atleast this is what google says) (still trying to find more info on this route)

          3. The third one is completely different one that enroutes through Nagarjuna sagar dam & is "the" shortest. However, the road is two laned mostly & manageable. Most of the Volvo's & lorries use this way & takes about 9 hours one way for the Volvo's.

Yes, I think this is the one I was trying to convey on #3 that is shortest.

The 3rd one is the best and traffic is very less compare to other 2 routes.

The road fine except for small patches between Narsaraopet & Karempudi.

I use this route only to travel between Hyd & Ongole.

              Thanks for the info guys.
Do you think there's any route where I can visit few places (on or little off the way) and have an overnight stay and then continue next morning?
Is it safe to have that 9-hr journey including a 2-lane stretch with volvo & lorries
              Regards

The volvo traffic will be only during night times, coming to lorries its not so busy road.

If you want to have a break journey, then you can halt at Nagarjuna Sagar, there is dam, museum & waterfalls near by. You can stay AP Tourism Guest house.
                Give way to trains.

I have used both route 1 and route 2 to ride to and fro Hyd- Chennai. If you opt for the Vijaywada route then your trip will have another 100 extra kilometrs to do compared to taking the route 2 (its a shortcut kinda thing a little after Ongole.)

Route via Vijayawada > added 100 kms + the road from vijaywada to Hyderabad is extremely dangerous as its jus a single lane with no dividers. Infact according to the road transport authority of AP, its declared as one of the most dangerous roads in the state as a high volume of accidents do happen on it.

Route 2 >short cut via ongloe . If you take this you will have to pass through a lot of villages which obviously means careful riding and no high speeding. Things to watch out are sudden speed brakers at entry and exit of most villages. Road condition was not all that great when I rode from chennai to hyd on it (was close to 2 years back)

I say you take the route 1 option. roads uptil Vijaywada from Chennai is excellent. Stay overnight at Vijaywada, get adeqate rest and be prepared mentally for the tough road ahead from Vijaywada to Hyd.

During your stay at Vijaywada, you can choose to visit

Kondapalli Handicraft village, Kondapalli fort, undavalli caves (its a rock cut temple)..Incase you have more time, do visit Bhavani Islands as well.

Good luck and have a safe and sound1. Cheers.

Pardon my ignorance, I was under the impression that Vijayawada-Hyderabad was like a express highway but with lots of truck traffic. The road was built with the intention to connect both the state capitals (in case Telangana becomes a reality).

That is the reason, i straight away ruled out that option, as it is one of the most dangerous road in the country.

I failed to understand - what has express highway got to be with dangerous road?
                        1. Its a super highway, but with heavy truck traffic & ppl driving crazy
                        2. Its a super highway not all the way from Vijayawada to Hyederabad as it is still work in progress & the work in progress area are dangerous
                        3. Its not a super highway at all. Its only two lane, but well laid road

Is there anything else apart from this?

Its not at all an express highway.
Its just 4 laned first 50 km of both the ends.
The rest is 2 laned with heavy truck, bus, car trafiic with people driving crazy.
