Default Paper Air Filter Cleaning Procedure

Hello guys a good issue is missing here..

Any one knows the procedure of cleaning the paper air filter, not the air blowing method that the service center people usually do.

There isnt much you can actually do, than tapping it against a wall, or putting compressed air thru it in the reverse direction. Any form of liquid cleaner would spoil the filter...

So does it means we can't clean it in house?

well, you can clean it in house if you have a air compressor etc in your personal garage.

but anyways, I have been using a 2 years old paper filter in my Karizma now. now this paper filter, after being thoroughly cleaned with compressed air and all the tapping work, was soaked in the liquid meant for cleaning the K& N filters and then washed completely with running water. later on, it was allowed to dry under normal sun shine and I have been using it for around 5000 kms now.

not many of us would accept this treatmen and most of us would laugh on the fact that I washed it with a liquid which is comparatively more costly then the filter itself but it was more for the sake of experiment.

Also, in the past I tried washing the paper filters of my Maruti Zen and Mitsubishi Lancer and then letting it dry under the sun. It worked a lot to a great extent but still, nothing can beat a new filter and I however wont recommend washing the filters.

Thanks for posting guys…

Yes the general method is the Compressor Air blowing through the reverse direction. But as DCS said there have other methods that clean it well. Only blowing air is not enough I think. I use to clean my filter by the vacuumed cleaner, just like air compression, reverse direction air blowing.

But Bajaj Pulsar’s manual says
Clean With Kerosene > Squeeze > Clean with Kerosene again > Blow Pressure compressed air > Dip into engine oil ( 20w40 ) > Squeeze Engine oil > Dry with cotton Cloth.

I think it’s the procedure for Foam type air filter, but not sure. But like that there have a good process to clean the paper type air filter.

^^ thats for the foam type. you need to understand that if any of the paper filter gets damaged or shrinks or anything, it could restrict the airflow, rather than opening it up.

Also it could cause the filter particles to clog the carburettor/injector...

I replace the filters every 6000 kms on my bikes ( all.. ) so theres only one air cleaning in between.. Compared to the dusty environment we have here.. im gonna do the same for my ninja.

Nikhil, Unicorn's filter is paper type. Its just use n throw type. But inbetween should clean with pressured air. Oiling is generally done only for K&N (or may be others which i am unaware). Stock filter for Unicorn is around rs.90/-

New viscous filter from Honda seems to be good enough but I am not sure if that filter shape is suitable for Unicorn.
