  • Honda unicorn dazzler : Multiple issues

    Hi all,
I have few general and specific questions. I drive a Honda Unicorn Dazzler.

    1. I'm currently using shell petrol is Speed a better alternative?

    2. I've done 2996kms is it still too early to use synthetic oils?

    3. I want to install LEDs for my tail light. I've looked at some very helpful posts in the DIY section, but I want to know, whether I can just fix the LEDs or is an AC/DC conversion necessary(Sorry I dont know much about the electrical system)?
Is it safe to do this? Can it withstand the rainy season?
Will the people at the service center cause trouble about it?
Can you suggest some good shops and mechanics in chennai for this purpose?
Are led strips better for this than LED bulbs?
Any idea how much it'll cost all together?

    4. When decelerating I use to clutch while easing off the accelerator instead of just releasing the accelerator. I though this method saves the engine some strain. Is it right or is there a better method?

    Thanks.

if your bike is still under warranty, stay away from any mods like LED tail lamps, it will void your warranty.

Yes, if you've lots of money & considerate towards fuel station owners . I'd suggest to use a the regular fuel from COCO or any good/reputed fuel station.

        Yes little bit early

There're 2 parts in brake lights. One is a constant glow when the headlight is turned ON & other is when you apply brakes. If the supply to both these functions is from battery, then its fine to fit the LED strip. But I'd strongly go with Prince here. Stay away from mods, if you vehicle is under warranty.

Quite a debatable topic I DON'T engage clutch when decelerating & got rid of that habit atleast a decade+ ago. I was being taught that, in addition to natural deceleration, when the clutch is not engaged, the engine also contributes to decelerate to an extent.

Secondly, it is better not to bother the clutch unless one is shifting the gear, which serves its purpose.

Thirdly, incase, you decelerate & engage the clutch & if you don't reduce the speed significantly, there's quite a difference in the speed between crankshaft & wheel. So when the clutch is engaged suddenly, the crankshaft bounds to take hit everytime & is no good for long time.

Re: Honda unicorn dazzler : Multiple issues

my dazzler has done 15415 KMs,
          100 KMs back i have done OIL change(ZIC Fully Synthetic 10-40 , 1 Litre)
last time i pour Honda Throttle Fully Synthetic 10-30 , 1 Litre in starting bike was very smooth but after 350 Kms not so smooth(Top gears slip sometime), so i change the oil brand as suggested by oil dealer.
i inspect old oil just before oil change ,just touch the oil guage dip stick & that was about 800ml after drain.
few days back -- it show some white smoke during cold start when i am using chowk .but after 1-2 minutes there is no smoke.
i doubt that rings are gone bad,
how it is possible that rings wear in just 15000 KMs .although i change the oil in every 2000-2500 KMs.
is it possible a lean AFR mixture cause smoke or rings wear down fast. i am getting FE of 55 Kmpl in local but decent driving.

should i change Rings only or Piston also
can i select CBZ extreme/ HUNK 's Ring + Piston (as per my knowledge the maximum engine spare parts of these three bike are same)
not a hard racer, but love to drive.

15k is actually too early for the piston rings to go bust. And you say that after 1-2 min the white smoke goes away and things are back to normal. Generally when there is a problem with the rings you will notice a bluish smoke coming from exhaust continuously. Also the exhaust has oily soot deposit in such situations - check your exhaust opening for the same.

Lean AFR mix does not give white smoke. Your FE is fine for normal riding.

In case you need to change parts, stick to Honda Dazzler specific parts, do not interchange critical parts like rings/pistons.

It may be possible that you did not measure the oil volume accurately and 800ml is incorrect measurement.

Valve seals gone kaput I think. Rings are fine and do not let any mechanic touch them, first get the valve seals replaced and then see. This job should not cost you much, around 300 rupees, even less if you do it yourself.

                +1
Bad valve seals/guides can cause smoke on start up. But the smoke color should be grey/blue i think.
And 15k is too early for rings/piston to go kaput.

Yeah, smoke should be bluish but that looks whitish to untrained eye.

Re: Honda unicorn dazzler : Multiple issues

i have done my bike's engine minor repair work.
when i open head assembly there was lot of carbon deposit on Piston & Inlet Valve(also in inlet valve gallery of Head )
i observe the Rings that there was little gap in ring's both ends when i place it in Cylinder, so i decide to continue with these rings.
i have change valve seal, valve seat repair.
now it don't show bluish white smoke any time till now, but there is a issue with starting in morning.
                    my idling is 1300-1400 RPM

                    1) it always start with choke(never mind) in cold morning.but after 23 minutes of starting when i try to move in 1 st gear it goes to die(no changes in tuning of Carburetor )
my doubt ,valves was tight, but that was fine, i inspect valve clearance (As it idling goes to 600 RPM when i try to down idling)

                    2) i throttle it high in neutral (4000-5000 RPM) & leave accelerator it rpm down very slowly(take some time 3-4 Seconds)

                    3) after some 5-6 Kms Ride when i stop the bike @ office (not engine) RPM goes down to 800 RPM but after a moment it idle normal 1300-1400 RPM.

Check if your choke is getting engaged by any means.
A slight engagement of choke will reduce the RPM and cause shut down of engine...
