• P180 consuming a lot of engine oil and getting overheated.

Dear experts,
I own a P180 UG IV, 2006 model and have clocked 70K+ Kms. The issue I am facing is- I daily ride 45 (22.5*2) Kms and looks like the bike is consuming too much engine oil and heats up too much. I can smell something burning while I halt at the red light. Last time I changed the engine oil on 25th April and came to Mumbai and covered approx 1000Kms and I went to a mechanic to top up the engine oil on 20th May. He showed that the oil was completely black and when he drained it was not more than 200-300 ml. I clearly remember the SVC guys filled whole 1Ltr of oil on 25th April. My bike doesn't gives out smoke or anything but I hear a low tic tic tic tic noise when in idle.

How did the noise started? here it is- I was competing with an Avenger and was doing 100+ and suddenly the engine turned off automatically and I tried restarting it and it started again and since then this tic tic tic tic sound is coming from the engine. (I think the oil was old and that could have caused this incident.) There is no power loss, it still clocks 105+without any issues but I am afraid of revving after that. Any advise would be of great help. I will take her to SVC but I want some of the experts over here to throw some light so that these SVC guys cannot convince me with some 'out of the league' problem.

Firstly, the UG IV was released only in '09/10 and definitely not before that.
Ok, anyway the UG version doesnt matter in your case.. and coming to your oil consumption issue:

1. 70K is a pretty decent life for a pulsar's engine. i.e. time for a rebuild
2. Are you sure you do not see any smoke ? Because sometimes it is difficult to spot smoke(if its only slightly smoking) on a bright sunny day. Get someone to hold the revs at around 4000rpm (on idle) and shine a torch at the exhaust area. you can even keep your palm at around 10cm away from the exhaust to see if you can spot the smoke under lights when its dark.
3. You may either need a replacement of the valve kit and/or a rebore/replacement of the block & piston.

I_Live2Ride: s1d is right. Time for engine rebuild.

Oil consumption and overheating are related to each other. Oil consumption will make engine overheat. Opposite is also true, overheating will make engine to consume oil. Do the engine rebuild ASAP.

Thanks.. What all things come under Engine rebuild and how much cost is expected? I'll check the smoke today as per S1d's suggestion.

if smoke is not coming from the silencer, you can do a test...keep a white cloth in the silencer area and remove it..if the cloth is black with oily layer, you need to rebore the cylinder kit!!

when was the last time, you got your engine head cleaned/ decarbed? Though 70K kms is time ripe for piston to wear out, in performance bikes. It will cost you around Rs 4 K max to change the set(labour charge excluded)

Good thing, Bajaj spares are cheap. At 70k, you are looking at an engine overhaul. Will cost you around 7,000 to 10,000 rupees depending on what needs to be replaced. Just don't rebuild the top end, go for a complete overhaul. Also get new cylinder kit instead of reboring.
I am back!

Some of the parts required for a complete rebuild (top and botton end):

1. New bore piston kit (costs around rs.2300) - or a rebore with oversize piston (cost including rebore + new piston/rings - approx 1000rs)
2. check valves/valve guides and if in good condition, a valve reseating job shoud be enough. otherwise need to replace the valve kit (valves/guides/seals)
3. Check and replace timing chain/tensioner
4. Gasket kit
5. Various bearings in the bottom end (i.e crankcase)
6. Crankshaft resetting to eliminate any play in the con rod.

These are the minimum required to do a rebuild, and any other parts that may be found worn/damaged should be replaced.

Cost of a rebuild should cost you around 8000rs (including labor) with a new bore piston kit (around 1200 lesser if u go in for a rebore with only new piston). Pulsar's spares are cheap compared to bikes such as the Karizma and CBZ.

Last time I had to ask the mechanic to open the engine because it got seized as there was no oil in the chamber ( The local mechanic drained the old oil and forgot to pour the new one causing the engine to seize.. :@) and there were scratches on the piston. It was in 2009, at some 50K... But currently, I dont feel any lose in power, pick up etc.. She is doing very well and just consuming oil... Do I still need to get the engine opened???

Yes sorry, mine is UG3... I see very light smoke coming thru the silencer and yes there is a sticky carbon layer deposited in the silencer.... The silencer is new and original.. got it replaced last year...

ok, so looks like you may need a rebuild. but first you need to see if the valve seals are kaput which may also cause some smoke in the exhaust.
otherwise its most probably the block/piston kit that needs replacement (or rebore) along with the other items mentioned in my prev post checked and fixed to be sure you don't have to keep opening up the engine frequently.

@I_Live2Ride, as you have covered over 70k+ kms and facing the issue of oil consumption and over heating, I guess it's time for a rebore. . .

Folks, thanks for your time and suggestios...

Guess what... don't know what happened to me I suddenly took my bike to a local mechanic next to my office in Kanjurmarg for some basic checkup a couple of minutes ago and he did a complete inspection. The bike is NOT drinking engine oil.. The level was low because the previous mechanic filled her with 1Ltr instead of 1.2Ltr.. There were no symptoms of oil on the spark plug... The peculiar tic tic tic noise was coming because the previous mechanic did not tighten the spark plug. The plug was tightened by just two threads and was not fitted properly. This new guy cleaned the spark plug and tightened it properly and wholaaaaaa... the tic tic tic sound is gone.... Moreover, I ordered riding gears from ebay and it should come in a day or two....That means I am in for the Mumbai->SulaVineyard-> Mumbai ride ... Cheers.....
