One thing that comes to my mind is fuel problem. Did you fill fuel recently, from a different bunk maybe?

My P150 doesn't run well when there is less fuel in the tank (< 2lts).. but I have no idea why that happens. Try filling 6lts of fuel from a different bunk and see whether there are any changes.

Getting gas from a different bunk SHOULD not pose such a problem. I get my bike filled from hundred different bunks (ok...100 was over exaggerated but still....).

When was the last time you got it serviced? If it has been some time then I suggest u to get it serviced. It might seem that the problem just started when you took it out yesterday but probably the problem has been building up from last few days and finally it gave away yesterday. Just see a mechanic. He should fix it.

One more thing you can do is to check if the air filter is chocked with dirt or soaked with water (because of rain).

Edit: You have installed K&N filter, am I right?

Edit2: "but when the engine is engaged and...." looks like some problem with the drive-train. Check your chain & sprockets at home and then go to the mechanic and get the clutch plates checked and anything else that might cause trouble.

1. worn out clutch plates?
2. Carb not properly tuned - running rich
3. Choke lever on?
4. Water entered air filter?
