One has to remember the whole engine mechanism (all moving/mating parts) has to be made lighter by re-designing, making one part 'light' is actually dangerous. The moving parts rotate at quite a high speed and small mass change will result in imbalance, the imbalance force gets bigger in magnitude with higher RPM and in worst case it may fail.

and yes i can understand that parts like gears ,crankshaft rotates at huge rpm so they have huge angular momentum hence one lighter part can cause imbalance , the lighter part might wear FASTER bcoz of heavy thumps of relatively heavy attached parts... pistons are relatively isolated entities and they are already taking thumps of explosion in cylinder so there being lighter is actually seems beneficial atleast to me bcoz the gas being burnt will need less effort to move piston down!! and @ high rpm it can produce some srs efficiency! |
