  • DIY - Daytime running lights for Activa

After seeing all these Audis and BMWs and the like with DRLs, i hit upon an idea to install DRL (Daytime Running Lights) on my activa.

Initially i was looking to construct the LED strips myself, but I found these led strips just perfect for the project. These are tough, waterproof and easy to install.

Usually these are available as DIY kits, but one of my friend got them assembled so it saved me time of assembly.

These are also available on DealExtreme something like these :
Waterproof 4.8W 475nm 60x3528 SMD LED Blue Light Strip (DC 12V) - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

    1. Installation:
These led strips almost fit directly into the indicator holder. I had to make a small notch so as to get the screwholder into the notch. On the other side, i used a small screw to fix it so it stays firm.

I plan to install 2 more strips inside the headlight assembly, but it is a time consuming process to open up the headlight, so left it for next time.

    2. Wiring:
As the circuit diagram show, i took the +ve supply from the junction of the brake lights as this goes live once you turn on the ignition switch. For the ground we can use any metallic body part, I connected to the headlight ground.

Also i installed a 2 pin connector so it becomes easy to remove the headlight assembly easily.

The pictures will give you a fair amount of idea as to how it looks. It looks bright at night.

    DRL V-2.0:
After getting some great comments from fellow members i have tried some modifications and mounted DRLs above the indicator which will not confuse vehicles from the opposite direction, also the color is white just like the DRLs found on high-end cars.

^^ I used these strips to make the drls. Usually these can be cut at the golden track into separate strips of 3 LEDs. I used 2 strips (6 leds) per side.

^^ This is how the holes were made so that the leds fit into them. Initially i had planned to mount them below the indicator (as u can see the holes) but those are not easily visible from the front, so mounted them above. had to seal those holes with hot melt glue gun. The glue gun is very handy for DIY stuff. Still need to figure out how to cover the DRL led holes with some kind of transparent film or sheet which will be protect the leds from dust and water (suggestions welcome).

^^ This is how it looks in the evening, quite bright and enhances visibility.

^^ Taken at daytime in the basement parking. Will also post one in daylight shortly which will give idea about LED visibility.

      Excellent work Janesh!!!
How about a round LED strip around the headlight? Would that be bright enough than the poorly lighted sucking damn stock headlamp?

BTW, you forced me for a 5* !!!

DRL with indicator housing is not a good idea IMO. People might get confused.

Thanks a lot Aargee. Its all the inspiration from you guys and Xbhp that i keep doing something or the other.
Yes it looks good and is an added safety as improves visibility at dusk. Yes stock headlamp sucks. I plan to put 2 more strips (3leds x 2) at the bottom part of the headlamp, but opening the headlamp enclosure is a task - have left it for another weekend.

Thanks for your suggestion bro. I know i can be confusing, but there is no alternate place to put them. lets see if i get feedback and comments on other placement options, may try them out.

Putting it inside the headlight assembly would have been better since your DRL doesn't look like DRL having installed it inside yellow light covers of turn signals!
IMO This setup could just confuse the oncoming or following traffic and increase the chances of a crash.

Quite a similar mod i did a few days back by just connecting the led strip with the feedback of the tail-lamp...

A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

Swas, thanks for your suggestions. My only problem is i am using LED bulb for my indicator , which is white in color, so either i have to get orange LED bulb and put transparent covers.
                  But thanks anyways

Nio, yes, i have got that suggestion and will do the changes. I plan to install it in the headlight but opening the headlight case is a tedious job, so will take it over one of the weekends.
                  Thanks Bro.

Good mod bro , try to put a transparent indicator cover & cover those your led indicator bulb with orange gilletin paper so they will throw orange light , or either put these DRL strips in the joint between Headlight & Indicators .

                      DRL Version 2.0

                      Hi Guys,

After getting some great feedback, i decided to put in white DRLs above the indicator so it would not confuse on-coming drivers as yellow ones do look like indicators.

                        Added Angel Eyes

                        Hi,

I have added Angel Eyes to the DRL setup. The angel eye goes around the headlamp and an additional DRL strip at the bottom of the headlamp from the inside.

the LED ring gives good looks.
but according to me Dont install that round LED ring on your bike if u dont have DC conversition.
The ring blow up LED at high rpm.
It is fixed on your headlight bulb surface.

I install 2 times for my bike n m fast rider at night also so ring get fused in single week.
It is juz waste of money.
It cost 60rs for each ring in mumbai.

Here is my LED ring fitted headlight with DRL pilot (position) lamp.

                            Great DIY Post.

The Daytime Running light takes lot of juice form the battery.

It will effect Battery charging. Will have self start problems.

I would suggest minimum number of LEDs
                            Helmets On +
                            High-Beams Off And
Only Headphones I need is my Exhaust!!

my LED tail-lamp never blew on AC.
Its the fusion of a two wheeled machine & a human being which creates a true biker.
