After months of work (half of it due to mechanic's frequent visits to his hometown), the work is complete and my bike is roaring.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It's really awesome to ride this vehicle. I rode the beast in full dry, full wet and sandy roads. The balance of the vehicle is just amazing. Also rode it on ring roads at speeds of around 80 (consciously keeping speed to 80 and below as full engine work has also been done). There's not one bit of vibration and the engine still has quite some more speed left. Also when on the road, it feels nice to see many many guys looking. It is a real headturner. |

1. The mechanic carefully dismantled the bike .Took about 3 days to dismantle to pieces.
2. Sent the chassis, mudguards, head, front fork pipe, side box, side cover for spray painting, 3. Sent the tank, silencers, crash guard, front fork tube, rear fork pipe, headlight reflector etc for electroplating. 4. He then got the Clutch cover and the engine cover for buffing. 5. Converted the coil to a 12V coil. Retained as points. Still contemplating switching to CDI. 6. Bought a CL-II handlebar, cut off the brake and clutch lever mouldings and got the handlebar plated. 7. Very sadly, the original Ignition switch was gone completely bad and had to change it. Not possible to source a working "round-key" type switch. Had to get the conventional "ON-OFF" switch. 8. Got a new battery, new wiring kit, new bottle coil. 9. In the process of dismantling the mechanic told me that the clutch plates are 50-60% worn off. Can still run for 5000 kms. But I decided to replace them. 10. Same is the case with the chain and chain sprocket. 11. Got a new crash guard and a new rear tyre-tube. 12. In the meantime, he dissassembled the engine, and gave me a list of items to be replaced in the engine. 13. Changed couple of gears, slector pins, all bearings, bushes were reconditioned. 14. Painted mudguards and headlight cover etc were given to another shop for the gold lining. Never understood why the spray painting guy does not do this job. 15. Plated tank (except the top surface) was given for top surface painting and then for golden lining. 16. Carburettor changed to the PACCO (I know its sad, but mileage increased from 22 to 32). 17. Assembly began once the chassis returned after painting. 18. First the rear forks. Then the front stem, then the front fork, then the twowheels. 19. Engine mounted and silencers fitted. Handlebar fitted and all the clutch lever fitted. 20. Kick the engine for about 10 mins and then suddenly, the engine starts to roar and fill the shop with smoke. The dark smoke. Let it run for a while (all the time feeding petrol using a small can directly into the carb inlet tube) and then the smoke reduces, the sound reduces and kind of smoothens out into the "yezdi beat". This was the sound i was waiting to listen to. 21. Then brought back the tank, seat after getting a new seat cover. 22. Fix the handle grips (the yezdi style grips with "thorns"). 23. Fixed the other accessories like indicators, horn etc and the side covers etc. The the final coat of wax polish done. 24. Collected my bike on a sunday(about 3 months from the day i left it in the garage). Went straight to the temple near home and got the Driving License from the gods. My dad was still with a slightly long face as he was not really in favor of the idea of buying a bike of yesteryear for want of spares and maintenance. 25. Straight from the temple went to the nearest petrol station and filled 5 litres fuel and went off to meet friends. 26. Everyone on the road was looking at me. At signals there were at least 5 guys who asked me if i still get spares and I said "YES, but not so easy. Need to search hard". I have used this bike (after restoration) for about 1200 kms and still people look at the bike with half open mouths as the thundering sound fills the roads for about quarter km radius. Not just the name but the bike is really a CLASSIC. Waiting for some more kms at low speeds before stretching the bike to the limit on a highway !!!!! |

Wow!! Awesome work there buddy.
This is the way this bike should be. Looking at your bike I am even more motivated to restore my dad's Yezdi. I am just waiting for the Finances..

I Grew up in Mysore
and a relative's house was near the Ideal Jawa factory.Then again a neighbor used to work for Ideal Jawa,another neighbor owned another first gen Jawa which he used to service himself(He is a mechanical eng). I still remember as a kid,standing and watching him dismantle the engine etc.I also remember him proudly showing us kids "Made in Czechoslovakia" engraved on the Egine/crank.Then my unlce owned one and he used to ride the bike from Shimoga to Bangalore and mysore.Lots of my friends owned Roadkings in collage,which was cheaper than the Jap machines.The touring experiences on this beast,especially to Madikeri was a different thing all together.The total lack of vibrations and the effortless manner in which it used to cruise at 110+ kmph.When the other 100+ cc 2T used to give erections from the vibes coming through the tank.The pictures of your bike ,bring back fond memories of riding em on highways(where they truly belong).

Superb job mate! This is one Classic that looks like a classic. The paintjob, decals, chrome bits here and there, the pin striping on the headlamp mount and the tank gives it that period look. All the people involved with this build seemed to know what they are doing and therefore such an output. The only tough part would be maintaining the chrome.
