PRESS RELEASE: Six-part series features the adventures of popular motorbike enthusiast Charley Boorman who explores unique motorcycle cultures across six Asian countries

New Delhi (April 1, 2013) -- Come May 2013, audiences across Asia can look forward to a turbo-injected travel series, titled ‘Freedom Riders Asia’ that celebrates man and motorcycle on the move, to be broadcast on the leading regional sports channel STAR Sports, produced in collaboration with leading global lubricants brand[i], Shell Advance. The programme, hosted by Charley Boorman, one of the world’s best loved and most recognisable bikers, will take viewers on an unforgettable road trip across six countries, over six thrilling episodes.

Working closely with Shell, Freedom Riders Asia was conceptualised and developed by leading sports channel STAR Sports, part of FOX International Channels (FIC) Asia, News Corporation’s international multi-media business and Asia’s leading pay-TV network.

With the innovative programme concept of having one man, on one bike with one tank of petrol, ‘Freedom Riders Asia’ will see Charley pair up with local bikers from each country and embark on a journey to explore the colourful Asian cultures of Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Vietnamand Thailand. Over the course of each episode, Charley will engage with the local biking communities and experience the delights of the city and its people, as well as partake in unique activities that celebrate the distinctive motorcycle cultures of each country…..all on one tank of petrol.

Shell Lubricants India Managing Direction Nitin Prasad said: “Freedom Riders Asia is all about celebrating and connecting bikers around Asia, while offering an entertaining travel and adventure experience to a wider audience. Importantly, through Charley, it is also a further expression of what Shell Advance stands for - enabling bikers to enjoy every ride and experience freedom through effortless mobility on the road.”

Simeon Dawes, Senior Vice President of Fox One Stop Media said, “Freedom Riders Asia is being developed specifically for the Asian audience as Asia has a growing population of adventure and travel enthusiasts. We are confident that audiences will appreciate and enjoy the places and activities that Charley will visit and experience, especially due to the local colours and flavours showcased.”

“We are delighted that Shell Advance has collaborated closely with us to produce this programme with an innovative show concept aimed at further engaging with the audiences on a deeper level.”

Charley Boorman, host of Freedom Riders Asia said, “Bikes have always been my passion, and I’ve always loved Asia and its diversity. What’s fantastic about Freedom Riders Asia is that the programme is enabling these passions to collide and I’m really looking forward to embarking on the bike trip of a lifetime”.

“I’m going to be meeting great local biker groups who will teach me a thing or two about riding in their part of the world and I cannot to wait to get over to Asia to feel the sun on my face, and feeling of freedom on the back of a motorbike!” In India, Charley will be riding alongside Gul Panag and Sundeep Gajjar who are avid bike enthusiasts and would contribute to the his exciting experience in India.

In addition to being broadcast and promoted on STAR Sports, Freedom Riders Asia will also reach out to a wider audience, through the promotion of the innovative programme across FIC Asia’s family of channels such as FOX, National Geographic and FX, thus giving the programme a significantly large promotional exposure.

Charley is often seen as ‘the adventure rider’; however his love of bikes and his riding skills bridge many aspects of the genre. Charley has been described by a motorcycle news journalist, himself a circuit racer, as a‘natural race rider’. Growing up with bikes in Ireland, racing, rallying, and adventure travel have fused bikes into the very fabric of Charley Boorman. Heuses a bike every day as his daily mode of transportation in London. Hail, rain or snow, you’ll often see him crossing Hammersmith Bridge heading for another meeting.

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

I have great respect for this guy. Unlike other 'celebrity bikers' who spend $40,000 on a bike & ride it 40 kms in a year, Charlie is a hardcore biker. He even attempted a Paris Dakar and broke his wrist. I only hate his silly wheelies in LWR & LWD

In my personal opinion, Charlie is in a similar league like the star biker Steve McQueen

Wow!! Now this is something!! I loved the Long Way Round and the Long Way Down moto-documentaries. Though Long Way Down and Race to Dakar felt somewhat toned down after watching Long Way Round, however I hope they do a similar trip and explore the lesser known parts of India. Hope Ewan McGregor is tagging along too with Claudio and the rest of the gang.. It would be a treat and also a great pride and honour to the Biking Community of India.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
                        The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

                        THE END
