Honda and BMW are currently in the stage of testing motorcycles which will communicate with other motorcycles, cars, traffic lights and maybe even dogs!!

This kind of technology is already being extensively tested and used on cars, but then drivers need help more than riders. The vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure technologies allow vehicles to communicate to stay updated on the ever changing road conditions. There around 3000 vehicles being tested in Michigan, and BMW and Honda intend to test out this technology on bikes in the same facilities.

With the help of this, road accidents involving motorcycle is aimed to be reduced drastically. Apparently vehicles can make quicker and better decisions than drivers/ riders, as they don't get distracted like humans. Motorcycles will therefore talk to traffic lights, roadside beacons, other vehicles and even dangerous curves.

This will also allow your motorcycle to choose the best route, with the least amount of traffic to ensure you reach your destination safe and fast.

With motorcycles going down the electric path, it would be the most logical outcome for it to be self driving and choosing.

The question remains, with motorcycles becoming increasingly intelligent, are the riders becoming inversely dumb?

Will a rider prefer to control a motorcycle with his right wrist, or a techie sitting in his booth many thousand miles away?

Hope it will also calculate the amount of mud, tar, or engine oil felt from some other vehicle while taking a turn or in flat stretch of open road as highway, along with how deep the potholes are, and will act accordingly (God helps us)

If this is being developed to Counter the negligence of Riders.. Isn't it actually gonna aid to that? The more features (of these sort) that are added, the more the riders ease off while riding.

They engineers has already made many algorithms to make a bike balance...

This will be a lot more complicated that just adding a few sensors. Sensors controlling a car don't need to worry about balancing the car - a car won't topple over and the driver wont get thrown off easily even if the safety systems in a car were to trigger some sort of antics to "save you from disaster". In case of a bike, it might just end up doing the reverse - Artificial Intelligence in a bike can actually interfere with the rider's calculations leading to issues like losing balance or losing the line on a curve which can turn out to be counter-efficient

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

Technological advances yes, but not if they are meant to replace thinking and overriding human decision making...the last say should always be with the rider/driver. Humans might get distracted, yes, but computers, as we all know, frequently have hick-ups which can be fatal, too. Among others, Toyota sticky throttle pedals come to mind... There is much controversy regarding safety and the use of fly-by-wire throttle pedals.

Plus there is a cost issue to all this. If the automobile scene in Europe is anything to go by, owning a 'small and simple' car has today turned out to be a luxury, again. Repair bills in the last 10 years have shot up. In France they now average at 500 euros per repair. Interestingly fines for driving unroadworthy cars have also gone up...

Needless to say a lot of this has to do with the fact that new technologies do fail, and are often ridiculously expensive to repair. Labour charges are going up too as garages need to invest in expensive new tools if they are to survive. Mechanics themselves are overwhelmed by the complexity of today's modern engines/technology. You often hear of garages changing expensive parts because the computer says so, only to find out later that the problem hasn't gone away... Fixing cars hasn't become simpler because of computers. We can't believe blindly in what the computer says. Diagnostic trouble codes cannot be taken at face value.

Motorcycles completely controlled by computers? No thank you, I'd rather cycle and live 'dangerously'.
