Delhi hikes road tax for luxury cars, high-end bikes

According to the revised road tax rates the cabinet cleared with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the chair, two-wheelers costing up to Rs.25,000 will be charged the existing two percent, while two-wheelers costing between Rs.25,000 and Rs.40,000 will now attract four percent road tax and those above Rs.40,000 will be charged six percent.

The rate for cars, priced up to Rs.6 lakh, has been doubled to four percent, while it has gone up to seven percent on those costing between Rs.6 lakh and Rs.10 lakh. Those owning motor vehicles costing Rs.10 lakh would have to pay a road tax of 10 percent.

Agreed... And for the kind of roads and traffic management we get here, road tax is highway robbery.

          1+ on that

In my opinion Road Tax across the nation should be unified, there shouldn't be any discrimination based on state. In fact road tax should be not for a state but should be for an entire nation so that people moving between states for employment are not harassed for road tax by local RTO

My freind don't forget Mumbai as well, back here we pay 7% of the Exshowroom cost, which makes no sense.

Ideally it is called as life time TAX, which means that we are paying for the next bloody 15 years in advance whether we like it or not.

Now back in Oman and other GULF countries, an individual is supposed to pay just the registration cost for a year, which I feel is excellent. Just incase if you feel like selling the vehicle in just 2 or 3 odd years

Bangalore is at least 12% or maybe more. I lost track. The next time I buy an expensive bike, I will do so from Chandigarh. Road Tax is the cheapest there.

That way Pondichery is cheaper I guess, but you'll have to pay the tax once you change the number back to "KA" or keep a stash to pay the traffic police who will start stopping you because of the non-karnataka registration number

                  OMG.....

12% GOSH that is absolutely killer Mate! INSANE......., the government is simply taking hefty amount from the common public and still no improvisation in terms of the road rules, or road condition.

Even if you were caught once every month and paid around Rs.200 (Maximum) each time, it is still Rs.2400 a year and less than Rs.10,000 in five years. Once a month is a worst case scenario - I have been riding my RE with a HR26 plate for the last five years, and I got asked only once and no fine.

Contrast that to paying the actual road tax - I think it was around Rs.40,000 for the Ninja 250, no? And it is going to be much more for bikes like the HD 883R or Kawa 650R!

Anyday cheaper to pay the cops.

Why so? Paying fines to cops is absolutely legit!

it wont happen since this is a state subject. GOI will only take care of NH , remaining has to be taken care of by the state and municipal corps.

BTW , Maharashtra has high road tax amount but we get good roads even in the remote areas. So no issues here for us (IMO).

delhi roads are awesome as compared to other cities. extra tax will help them generate more revenues , more infra work can be done.
