Euro 156 per year on a 320d is still waaay cheaper than India, even in absolute terms. Let's say you buy a 320d in Bangalore. The road tax will be around INR 312,000 which is Euro 5,300. Assuming that you keep the car for 10 years, it is still Euro 530 a year, which is 70% more than what you pay for your car each year.

And I have not even taken the average income into consideration yet!

looks like you have been much luckier than I was with non-karnataka number plates

... but aren't ppl staying in a state for more than 6 months supposed to get the localized numbers?

Actually it is 12 months. After that, you are supposed to get the local numbers. But I thought the taxes here are daylight robbery, so I would prefer to pay the stipulated fine of Rs.100 for the first time you are caught and Rs.200 for the subsequent times.

Have never been stopped for that though I have been challaned for other offenses like wrong parking etc. The police never mentioned it.

Me too.. I've been riding my Pulsar with HR Registration for around 3 years now, here in Bangalore.

Have been caught 5 times i.e. 100 bucks every time. Rs. 500 is way cheaper than the 5000+ I would have to pay to for the Road Tax.

And apparently the new Traffic Commissioner, Mr. Praveen Sood is lenient with vehicles with other state registrations... so nobody has stopped me for the past 1 yr.. could be my cop dodging skills too

And yes my next bike would not be bought in Bangalore... for sure.
