The vagaries of the disturbed soul are relentless, often leading to disturbia. Disturbia caused as a direct result of being kept away from love and passion which in this case points to a single entity -> Motorcycling!
The past two months were life altering for me. The Leh Marathon revived my senses, peeled by brain and satisfied me wholly. The heart received its share of the warmth from ‘her’. She walked into my life, almost unexpectedly and life became a bed of roses all over again. Her arrival brought with her, my long lost happiness, my moment of ecstasy and oodles of joy! A lot happened over the course of these two months. I fell in love… I got engaged…..ityadi ityadi… And amidst all that, I failed to realize that it had been more than two months that I had even attempted to ride out and relight the burning flame. A 3 day long weekend came dressed in the perfect disguise for me to head out on the mountains once again… But alas, I fell ill and was bed-ridden for the good part of the week. But a man possessed is a man hard to rope in. The long weekend went by, the next weekend came in and paved the way for a ride and finally Apollo and I got the opportunity to ride out, yet again. The Old lady had been parked in the exact same spot for the last two months, silently weeping in her corner and trying to come to terms with reality. The bitter reality which reminded her that her master had suddenly discovered that he was bisexual and left her for a more attractive and menacing ‘male’, parked just a few yards ahead of her. Nonetheless, she was patient; she knew that her time would come; she would win her master back, somehow, some way! The destination was finalized in a day and the route was charted out. Janjehli in H.P it was, but not through the run-off-the mill road that every Tom Dick Harry and Sally take, but through another way around, one less explored, unpredictable, but immensely scenic! Gaurav, a friend, had been through that route a couple of weeks, his reconnaissance assured that this was one road not to miss! Archit Mittal was my partner in crime for this ride. After a hard day’s work in office, I managed to leave Delhi at 9:30pm on a Friday after tying some basic stuff to the CBR’s rear. I took the road to Shimla, from under the Zirakpur over-bridge and reached the meet-up point i.e. the Panchkula crossing at around 1am. Here began the wait sojourn, as Archit managed to turn up 30 mins late and that too after repeated pester calls! 1:40am -> We leave Panchkula and head out towards Shimla. A brief stopover at Shoghi for some food to savor, and we reach Shimla around 4, cross Shimla and take the Dhalli – Naldehra road to Tattapaani. The ride was elementary, nothing much to ride about, apart from the fact that I was having a hell of a time riding out at midnight in pitch darkness! Kurt was back….. Crossed Tattapaani and it was on the road to Chindi that we welcomed dawn over a round of smokes! The hills are mesmerizing during the transition into daybreak. Intake of the morning breeze gives your tired lungs a new leash of life, believe me! And I was relishing my new leash to the core. The wee hours of the morning ![]() We reached Chindi in a flash and decided to visit Mr Sharma of the HPTDC’ hotel Mamleshwar who was an acquaintance we had known over BikerZone’s 1st Mega-ride to Chindi. But as I reached the Hotel, I see Archit off the Enfield. This was the start of a chain of misery that was going to bug us in the forthcoming time! The bullet had a rear puncture. We got out tools out and began the operation puncture – no.1. Getting the hands dirty ![]() ![]() ![]() Took off the wheel, got the tube out, and replaced it with a new one. Thereafter the attempt to stick the sidewall back into the wheel was all in vain. No matter how hard we tried, the damn thing just wouldn’t get back into the wheel completely. We had no choice but to take the wheel to the nearby village – Churag and get a mechanic to fix it for us. Two experienced mountain raiders, and were not able to get a silly sidewall in! We laughed our assess off, first cursing ourselves, then one another. Finally the job was done. We took the wheel back to Chindi and stuck in back to the rear. Had some rest and kicked off again. We were just about to descend from the hillock where Mamleshwar is, back to the road, and what do I see - > the bullet’s deflated rear wheel…AGAIN! The process was repeated, this time though we took the bike to Churag after pumping in air to the rear. Tired and hungry, we waited in anticipation for the bike to get back on both wheels. And then FINALLY, at 11am, 3.5 hours after we had reached Chindi, we continued our journey, this time without any folly. We took a village road, the road for which we had made the excursion, that would lead us to Janjehli. The road was very narrow and purely screwed up. The route ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Began to get narrower with the passage of each kilometer ![]() ![]() ![]() To be continued –

The Red bull! ![]() It was a pack-track, a mule track to be more precise which narrowed down to bare essentials within a few kilometers. On top of that, the incline was tremendous. The Ceeber began to heat up badly due to lack of sufficient cooling and on top of that, heavy inclines! The radiator fan began spinning oh my good lord did it spin like crazy! Mud made things worse, but I was careful this time not to seep in deep and find a shallow route across the mud patches. The road was dangerous 1) Because of the incline and 2) lots of patches had sand over them and since the road was thin, fishtailing could not be avoided and the bike used to barely make it though out of a corner, keeping both tyres on the road. One little mistake and the person would be flung over the cliff bike et al! Hence caution was the need of the hour. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cleaning the radiator ![]() A closer view of the ‘road’ ![]() Finally after around 2 hours and only 15 kms, we hit the Janjehli – Shikari devi road, where rocks on the road welcomed us. Janjehli was 10 kmd downhill. Tarmac appeared after 3 of those 10 and then it was the customary descend to the destination! ![]() Spot the Ceeber ![]() We were scheduled to put up at the FRH Janjeli, which was perched up a hill about a kilometer from the road. The condition of the otherwise smooth passage up to the rest house was that a bridge over the river had been washed away owing to flash floods last year; they had ruptured the connection. Now, we had no option but to leave our bikes parked on the road. While we were contemplating what steps to take next, a small kid, around 12-13 years of age walked up and informed that there is another way to reach the FRH but it was ‘kaccha’ and we had to cross a river enroute. That got my ears raised and arse itching! So we took it, plain and simple! ![]() ![]() The vehicles were parked some 100m away from the FRH. The caretaker was not there initially but arrived shortly with the raw chicken and other stuff which was going to be our dinner for the night. Archit had carried the rum and thus began a round of drinks. The FRH ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was pretty tired as I had been traveling for the last 18 hours. We both dozed off pretty early at around 8pm in anticipation that tomorrow we shall have an early start and would be Chandigarh by 2-3pm…….If only wishes were horses....! To be continued...
