Default “Celebrating Life”! Our Winter Ride to Coastal Kerala into Coorg and a Taste of Tibet

Christmas was just over. A period of friendship, family, fine food and fun- mostly in overdose. The New Year was just around the corner and more of the above in excess was waiting. We had to clear our heads during the lull and get some sanity back to the way of things. Yes it’s a season of celebration and a joyful one too but we need to celebrate life itself. So what do we do?? Stupid question Of course we RIDE !!

The Onward Route:
Bangalore/Mysore/Hunsur/Periyapatna/Kushalnagar/Siddapura/Virajpet/Iritty/Mattanur/Kannur.

We have some friends at Kannur who were hoping to meet us and since Kannur was till now unmarked on our route map we decided to explore. We had ridden to Madikeri in Oct 2010 on our 1989 Kinetic Honda and riding through Coorg is always a pleasure.

We leave early as always. Riding into a misty and chill morning, waiting for the sun to rise and spread his glow and warmth is always special, though this time it was a little too chill for comfort.

We stop at Mandya for some hot idly vada and steaming cups of coffee which warmed us up some what. Once on to the Mysore/Madikeri road the morning had warmed up and the lovely stretch of road was a pleasure to ride.

Coorg is truly amazing. Miles of coffee and pepper plantations and the rejuvenating fresh air really lifts up the spirits. An occasional break for some tender coconut or fresh coffee is really refreshing.

After Kushalnagar we turn on to SH 91 in the direction of Iritty. The road starts to get bad and patchy and shakes us up quite a bit, but then, like life, roads also are a mix of the good and the bad, we just have to take it in our stride and make the best of it.

We have lunch at Siddapura and as usual we get strange looks and queries about “why” we have to make this tour by bike?? ‘crazy couple’ they may be thinking, but we are quite used to it by now, just smile and ride on.

A little after Virajpet as we descend towards Kerala, we come to one of the loveliest stretches of curvy forest road we have ridden on. Sparse traffic, super smooth curvy road and embraced by the forest on both sides.

As we near Iritty, the roads get bad again for a stretch till Mattanur. From Mattanur to Kannur it’s a lovely road again, though the traffic gets quite heavy. We reach Kannur by late afternoon and meet up with our friends.

The return ride and “A Taste of Tibet” coming up soon.

To Be Continued…

CHEERS GUYS

Amazing pics! Especially the one captioned "Curves are a riders joy". Which NH/SH is that?
