Default Pune - Lonavala: Off the beaten path

Day 1 - Sat (28-Jan). I rode down on my R15 from Mumbai to Pune a total distance of 150 Kms in 3.5 hours (Left 8:30am Bandra & Reached 12pm Koregaon Park) incl. 3 short stops. Do not go via Panvel as almost the entire road is dug up to make way for a flyover which is far from complete. Instead, take the detour via JNPT which circumvents the entire Panvel city and exits back on the old Mumbai -Pune highway. Nothing much to report except I smoked a maxed-out Bullet-500 on the way.

Day 2 - Sun (29-Jan). We began our day-ride to Lonavala at 8:45am from Koregaon Park. Our destination was Lonavala but via the back roads which began by taking a left from the highway just after Dehu road junction and then towards Pavna lake and then Lonavala. My fellow riders, Anji (Bullet350), Asheesh (R50S BMW 1961), Nobby(Bullet350), Kurush(Bullet500), Parag(RX100) and my sister who rode pillion, thoroughly enjoyed the ride. It was a great feeling to be out in the clean and cool winter air riding through some very rustic and scenic parts of India. Surprisingly, the roads were fairly decent with very few patches of rubble. We also came across many riding groups out for the day which endorsed the fact that biking is gaining in popularity amongst the youth of India.

We reached Lonavala at around 11:45am after which we halted at Kumar's Resort for some snacks and tea. We wound up at 1pm after which I rode to Mumbai reaching home at 3pm and the rest returned to Pune via the highway.

Thanks to Asheesh who planned the ride and prepped some of the bikes for the ride. What will we do without you?

All in all we had a relaxed ride, good comradeship and left happy with everyone looking forward to the next meeting.

The roads are pretty decent. Typical single track tar roads once off the highway. At most places one can average around 30 to 50 kmph without a sweat. This is a must do trip for especially the Pune guys.

Nice ride. Could you just explain this route in detail. I didn't get where exactly to take a left turn after dehu road junction to reach pavna lake.

Some more Pictures from Asheesh's camera. As Asheesh had just finished doing extensive engine work the BMW R50S was taken for a "run in". I can tell you the bike ran very silently and was a showcase in engineering for a bike of that era.

nice ride...another off-beat road is Pune-Mulshi-Tamhini-Aamby Valley. A very scenic ride.

I have done the Mulshi-Tamhini-Amby Valley road trip about a year back but found the road in really bad shape. Though the scenery is very nice. I remember we had all stopped for a picnic on the way.
