“Biker’s Itch”, all of us –surely near 50,000 of us on xBhp know what it is. The symptoms and the cure. The aching desire to mount our steeds and just ride!
I had done a short ride a while back to fix this itch. Though it was quite ‘rejuvenating’ I somehow felt like a kid who was offered a sweet treat and it was taken away just as he started to enjoy it. I was hungry for more! Then the good Lord Ganesha helped us out with a two day holiday and we gratefully grabbed it.
The Original Plan:
The initial plan was to ride up to Kollegal, visit a Tibetan Monastery nearby and then ride up the B.R Hills and spend the day there. After Kollegal we rode up to B.R Hills. The ride was quite enjoyable through lonely forest roads with hardly a soul in sight (except an angry bison who didn’t take kindly to being photographed and was about to charge
Once on top we realized that there wasn’t much by way of accommodation and the jungle safari which we planned has been stopped. A change of plan was called for!
The Changed Route:
We rode back down to Kollegal still undecided on where to go. Then we struck upon the idea of riding through Sathyamangalam to the Nilgiris.
I’ve been riding to The Blue Hills since the 1970s when I was a brash youngster with a group of boisterous young friends on Yezdis, Rajdoots and Bullets. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been there but somehow it continues to fascinate me, so we go on!
The Onward Route:
The route, as many of our friends on xBhp will endorse is truly scenic. Single road with sparse traffic through enchanting fields of green and lonely, sometimes scary forest roads and abundant twisties to thrill us bikers. So what was to be single hill climb to B.R Hills turned out to be a Triple (B.R.Hills, Sathyamangalam ghats and The Ooty Masinagudi ghat)
The ride was in a way special for us. Our birthdays run into each other (wifey 20Sep & me 21Sep). So it was a celebration of sorts. And what better to celebrate than to ride up the curves, breathe in fragrant mountain air, spook yourself in the forest, soak in the amazing views and Dance with the Hills!!
We break journey at our niece’s place at Wellington and after a warm welcome and hot food we break for the day.
The return ride and pictures will be up soon !!
P.S: Most of the pictures were clicked by wifey while on the move (applause, applause)
Cheers Guys & Ride Safe
