Default Day 4 : Gangtok - Lachung

Though planned to start at around 8:30AM from Gangtok towards Lachung but actually managed to head for that place after 12noon, as we had to give an interview to an English Daily out there.
This is the right leg of the bifurcation from Chumthang we’ve planned to take. Altitude there was about 8738ft. It’s nearly 136odd km from Gangtok which local jeep drivers take around 9 long hours. We were wrong in our homework and thought this will take no more than six hours.
So we were cruising through the mountain enjoying the beauty around though the road was nothing to be mentioned!!! There was a zone called “Bolder Shooting Zone” as bolder from top can slide down at any moment, so everybody was advised to leave that place as quickly as possible without stopping. We followed the same but slowed a bit to get the feel of such a place hounding for death.
After few minor slips in new major inclinations where there is no road only gravel to welcome you we reached Mangan where the last Petrol Pump in North Sikkim is. Filled our tanks to its brim and filled the 5litres containers we were carrying all the way. This was the place where we had the first glimpse of Kanchenjangha Range bathed with golden rays of setting sun.

While we were nearly 34km away from Lachung we talked to few localities about how long will it take and road condition. Much to our surprise their reviews are no better than an insane. Some said 3hrs, some 45mins poles apart in their comments!! So our advise to all fellow tourer it’s better not to ask them about roads and it’s condition and if you have done that please verify it with others and your cognizance!!!
When we were nearly 22km far from Lachung it was already dark nearly 7:30PM, shops around was closing, life there is gradually coming to a standstill. We were already late by more than 4 hours because of two reasons; first we stated late second road was pathetic which brought our average speed down to 15kmph.
After an abrupt early dinner at 7:30 – 8 PM we started off at pitching darkness at 8:30PM for Lachung. We were preparing for an experience beyond limits of imagination … riding through treacherous hills of North Sikkim at night in absence of any modern amenities and life.
Only four souls were on the roads, riding on the curvy and bumpy roads at that
darkness. We could hear stirring melancholy sung by wild bird where full moon was ushering light for our travelling. A strange eerie feeling shrouded all over the place only known sound accompanying us was the sound of engine!!! Visibility was reduced to 10meters maximum while we were riding. In this course we saw a giant silky silver drape coming down from huge height creating deafening sound …yes that’s a moon-lit whaterfall seen in amidst darkness. This site is perhaps the best; one can ever savour in all his entire life travelling in hills.
It took us nearly 10 long hours to complete the journey and we were at Lachung at 10:30PM!!! We managed an accommodation and stayed there that night relishing the thrill we had in the journey that night.

Fuelling up

More to come.. hold on
