Recently, we had the opportunity for an #Unscripted ride to Leh from Noida on a TVS Ronin fitted with CEAT ZOOM XL tyres. Previously, we embarked on a journey with the TVS Ronin to Goa for the Motosoul biking festival, organized by TVS for bikers of various categories. This time, our expedition took us in a completely different direction, northbound to the high altitudes of Leh, where diverse terrains awaited. Thus, meticulous preparation was essential. While we were already aware of the TVS Ronin’s touring capabilities from a prior journey, this time we aimed for an added boost in confidence and contact with the road, even on challenging surfaces. This led us to switch to the dependable CEAT ZOOM XL tyres for our Ronin.

CEAT ZOOM XL tyres are the result of extensive research and quality testing conducted at CEAT labs. They emerge as an ideal choice for high-speed performance and extended tyre life, marked by the first-ever ‘H’ Speed Rating range from CEAT. This ensured our trust in their excellent performance, whether on city roads, highways, or winding mountain paths. The compound and tread pattern of these tyres ensures stability, safety at high speeds, and confident leaning through curves. Their versatility has also earned them the status of original equipment tyres for many two-wheeler brands in the country.

Thanks to the Zoom XL’s wider tread arc radius, a broader contact patch was achieved, delivering effective grip and a planted feel. Even wet conditions didn’t hinder surefooted braking, thanks to the special tread pattern that rapidly repels water from beneath the tyre. Furthermore, the tyres effortlessly conquered mild rough terrains, supplementing their already impressive performance on the tarmac.

Hence, opting for CEAT ZOOM XL tyres for our TVS Ronin was a natural choice, enabling us to confidently conquer miles of terrain. Our rider, Dr. Manan Chaturvedi, a.k.a. Shuttervedi, shared the excitement of the ride. Not only was he poised to reach Leh, but he was also exploring the region for the first time, despite years of riding experience.

For a lighter travel experience, the bike was equipped with a Rynox Tank Bag and saddlebags for secure luggage storage. To capture the journey’s moments, we carried a versatile Sony Alpha 7 R2 Mirrorless Camera with a 24-240 lens and a flexible gorilla pod. Additionally, a GoPro 9 Black and GoPro Max accompanied us for on-the-go action recording.

DAY 1: Noida to Pathankot – 500kms

With our preparations complete and the inviting mountains of Leh ahead, our journey began in the early morning. The day commenced with the blessings of the rain god, and with the reliable CEAT Zoom XL tyres on our TVS Ronin, we felt assured of a comfortable ride even in rainy conditions.

Our chosen path led us from Noida to Pathankot via Ludhiana and Jalandhar. While rain accompanied us until the outskirts of Delhi as a farewell gesture, the remainder of the ride was characterized by clear skies. Cruising over smooth tarmacs and through picturesque fields of Punjab, we arrived in Pathankot later in the evening, rejuvenating ourselves for the anticipated excitement of the following day.

DAY 2: Pathankot to Srinagar – 270kms

Anticipation filled the air on this particular day, as we embarked on a journey into a realm adorned with mountains, chinar trees, and serene lakes. Indeed, we were about to venture into what we commonly refer to as the “Paradise on Earth,” Kashmir. Our chosen path encompassed the route from Pathankot to Srinagar, passing through Kathua, Lakhanpur, Jammu, and Udhampur.

The entire route was marked by its magnificence, featuring exceptional roads that delighted us at every turn. However, our enthusiasm was met with an unexpected hurdle when Udhampur greeted us with a prolonged 2.5-hour traffic jam, a consequence of a landslide on the route. Yet, our excitement remained undiminished, for we were on the threshold of reaching Srinagar, one of the most exquisite places we could ever imagine. Our arrival in Srinagar was a tad delayed due to the traffic delay, preventing us from witnessing the beauty that the city is renowned for. Yet, there was no need for concern, as the promise of the next morning held the prospect of revealing the captivating landscapes of Srinagar in all their glory.

DAY 3: Srinagar to Kargil – 205 km

When the term “Srinagar” is mentioned, it invokes thoughts of Dal Lake and houseboats. Therefore, how could we traverse the city without witnessing this captivating scene? The day commenced with a visit to and immersion in the splendour of Dal Lake, where we observed the enchanting lifestyle of houseboats.

Gazing at the houseboats, a sense of resonance quickly formed within, akin to the spirit of a Biker on a long journey. It’s comparable to moving with one’s abode on wheels, if not sailing on waves like a house. However, we had to bid farewell to this picturesque sight, for another historically significant and stunning destination awaited: Kargil. Thus, our ride persisted towards Kargil, encompassing the breathtaking landscapes of Sonamarg and Drass.

And how could we journey forward without experiencing the chilling yet inspiring tales of valour exhibited by the Indian Army at the Kargil War Memorial?

DAY 4: Kargil to Leh via Indian Army’s 13620 post – 250 km

Kargil! after Leh this is the second-largest city in the Ladakh region. When discussing Leh, notions of peace, monks, and monasteries often come to mind. However, in the context of Kargil, thoughts immediately turn to the four wars we’ve experienced with our neighbouring country in the past. While we proudly emerged victorious from all of them, the cost was the loss of many precious lives on both sides. During our visit to Kargil, the idea arose: why not seize the opportunity to explore a place where these historical events unfolded?

And so, we visited the renowned war point known as “13620 post,” situated at an elevation of 14,094 feet above sea level. This site had only recently been opened to civilians a few weeks before our visit. The oxygen levels began to deplete here, evident in the way it affected our breathing. This experience made us contemplate even more deeply the tremendous challenges the brave soldiers faced while fighting in such harsh conditions, and even today protecting us from any oncoming danger. 

Speaking of challenging circumstances, both the TVS Ronin and the CEAT Zoom XL Tyres performed remarkably well in the demanding environment of high altitude. After the visit to the 13620 post, our journey continued towards Leh, following the route that traversed Kargil, Mulbekh, Lamayuru, Fotu La, and finally reaching Leh. Along the way, we encountered some of the most breathtaking roads, landscapes, and witnessed the fascinating phenomenon of the Magnetic Hill.

DAY 5: Leh to Nyoma – 185 km

Finally, on Day 5, we arrived in Leh – the largest city and the capital of Ladakh. Situated at 11,562 feet above sea level, the lifestyle here differs significantly, even down to the most fundamental aspect: breathing.

Leh! The mere thought of this place conjures images of snow-clad rugged mountains, serene monasteries with monks, and, of course, the iconic Shanti Stupa. As you enter this breathtaking city, situated on the banks of the Indus River, you are met with a living embodiment of peace, a tangible representation of tranquillity.

Therefore, a visit to the Shanti Stupa and Namgyal Tsemo Monastery was absolutely essential.

En route to the Shanti Stupa, one cannot afford to miss the Namgyal Tsemo Monastery. Established in the early 15th century by King Tashi Namgyal in 1430 AD, this monastery is renowned for its three-story solid gold idol of Maitreya Buddha. The view of Leh city from the gompa is truly awe-inspiring, as it transforms with the changing play of light. This monastery is a favourite among photographers for a good reason.

Upon reaching the Shanti Stupa, its symbolism of peace becomes as evident as the stupa itself. It’s not just beautiful; it’s magnificence personified and exudes an aura of serenity. Simply being present, seated in quiet contemplation, aids in clearing one’s mind. While one could easily spend an entire day here, it was time to progress towards the day’s destination: Mahe.

This day allowed us to experience a myriad of terrains all at once. We encountered straight roads weaving through the rugged mountain ranges of Leh, long stretches of uneven roads, and scenic routes where mountains stood on one side and rivers flowed gently on the other.

While the original plan was to halt in Mahe, upon arriving, we realized that accommodation options were scarce. However, a pleasant surprise awaited us – a police checkpost accompanied by a small dhaba. But the highlight was undoubtedly the presence of a CEAT Bike Mobile Crew. In this area where roads were carved through the mountains and networks felt like a distant dream, having an expert mechanic to attend to your bike felt like a godsend.

Despite the strong urge to pamper the deserving bike, given that the day was drawing to a close, we decided to continue ahead and avail the service on our way back the following day. The next available lodging with network connectivity was 20 kilometres ahead in Nyoma.

Upon reaching Nyoma, faced with the absence of proper hotels, we opted for a homestay. This decision proved to be splendid, as the room’s allocated view showcased stunning snow-clad mountains with an unobstructed panorama.

And so, the day concluded, leaving us with a mingling of joy and wistfulness. This was the point where the ride would make a significant U-turn, leading us back home.

Day 6 – 10: Journey back home

Starting from Nyoma, we retraced the familiar route that would lead us back home. However, a crucial pit stop was required before continuing the journey – a much-needed servicing for our trusty machine in Mahe. Thus, the 6th day commenced in Nyoma with a maintenance session for our TVS Ronin, expertly performed by the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew stationed in Mahe.

Though the TVS Ronin continued to perform seamlessly, it’s often said that one might overlook the necessity of rest and care, a truth that applies not just to humans but also to machines. Having traversed a myriad of terrains akin to a roller coaster ride, pampering the bike seemed like a thoughtful idea, don’t you think?

CEAT Bike Mobile Crew

On Day 6, as we embarked on our journey back home, our first stopover was at the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew. This initiative by CEAT has been introduced to address the challenges encountered by bikers in regions lacking accessible mechanics over extended distances. The primary goal of this initiative is to ensure that bikers can continue their voyages without enduring prolonged delays due to breakdowns, thus safeguarding their safety.

This service has been piloted in Sarchu and Mahe, both located in Ladakh, with plans to extend its reach to other renowned biking destinations across India. While CEAT is typically associated with tyres, the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew goes beyond tyre repair, offering an extensive array of services, including comprehensive bike repairs. This ensures that riders can access top-notch maintenance and support, irrespective of their location or the terrain. Operating through a mobile van model, this service can effortlessly traverse challenging terrains, delivering swift assistance even in the most remote locales.

Upon arrival at the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew Van, one is greeted by a skilled mechanic and a dedicated assistant, both committed to delivering exceptional service to stranded bikers. They aim to fulfil the needs of riders efficiently and effectively.

Drawing from our firsthand experience at the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew in Mahe, we wholeheartedly believe that this groundbreaking initiative by CEAT will reshape the way bikers explore and encounter India’s most captivating and secluded biking routes.

Following the service, as our journey resumed, we discerned a noticeable difference between the ride before and after the service. This realization underlined the importance of sometimes addressing elements that may not be immediately apparent. In this context, the servicing of our TVS Ronin proved to be invaluable. Despite the bike already performing smoothly, the service at the CEAT Bike Mobile Crew elevated the overall experience significantly.

Subsequently, we retraced our path homeward, journeying through Mahe, Leh, Kargil, Srinagar, Pathankot, and finally arriving back in Noida. This ride concluded a roadtrip spanning over 3200kms safely, enabling us to share stories and experiences that will be cherished for a lifetime.
