  • The 'Anti-Idiots' Campaign

This is my request to all those out there who are troubled greatly by the lack of proper traffic sense in India.

An appeal first, to ourselves, to consciously make efforts to improve our personal traffic sense on a daily basis. And then to provide a voluntary service to those who need to be corrected. A herculean task no doubt. But I have had this dream of a better road sense for a long time now.

This time I'm voicing it publicly..Again!

    This was my original idea:
    http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/pit-stop...ng-school.html

But circumstances have led me to scrap that plan.

Here's what I have in mind now:

    1. Each day that we have time off from other responsibilities, go out on a ride/drive to keep in check the actions of ourselves and others on the road. If we can do this every day despite our other commitments, nothing like it.

    2. Which entails going out of our way to offer corrective help to those who need it.

    3. Take out time to view the road sense in one's own vicinity. Setup voluntary teams or groups.

    4. Appoint 'Captains' for each locality on rotation. Those who have managed their personal best without errors in that month can take up the mantle based on group consensus. Responsibility: Keep a track of all active volunteer work for the month and address areas of opportunity.

    5. Most importantly, people with patience and politeness are the key to the success of such a campaign. Not to forget, practice before preach.

    6. Get recognized by institutions like CEAT, xBhp, Auto-magazines, Castrol, Riding Gear Officials, Driving Schools, etc for our efforts in order to generate wide spread awareness and national involvement at no personal gain/profit.

    7. Partner with regular events like AIDS Ride and Helmet Awareness rides. Generate positive interest in the police/government/celebrity fraternity.

Difficutlies I have found so far:

    1. It's easier to correct those in smaller vehicles than those on/in more expensive ones.

    2. It's also very easy to lose one's temper in these situations. So another area not to be taken lightly.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having recently started on this idea, I am still in the nascent stage.

Needless to say all encouragement and practical critique would be highly appreciated.

Far too long have I sat around saying I first need to get myself secured. But I figured, it's now or never.

Let's take our xBhpian pledge to the next level!

it sounds easy on paper, but trying to correct people while being polite and keeping our cool is very difficult because of our ego as well as that of the other persons.

if some1 wants to take up this initiative in pune then i'm in, just waiting for my first salary to come so i can buy full gear.

^ It always did look easy buddy. But I know it's tough. Most importantly for ourselves. Initiative has to come from within. Today's my day off. Will do my best.

consider me in, i think a helmet awareness rally through all the colleges in oune would do quite some good.
i hav been able to convert some posers with r15's into posers wearing helmets by showing them how a helmet looks so much cooler when worn while ridin a r15, so maybe a large scale initiative through all colleges of pune would do quite some good.
i have some ideas for a seminar too, will discuss them later as i hav to get to work now

I'd be happy to be on-board with this. I'd suggest rather than confronting people personally (unless you know them), figure out ways to promote proper driving habits through information campaigns. When you confront someone, you're basically telling them they're wrong. No one likes to admit they're wrong, even if it's true. With an information campaign, you give them the option of making it "their" idea, or at least of accepting that the idea comes from authority rather than any one person.

Getting CEAT and other organizations involved would help greatly, if they're willing, as they have the resources to actually produce public service advertising like television commercials, billboards, and magazine ads. More importantly, advertising from them will have what is called "high production value", which means it won't look like it was done by two teenagers borrowing dad's video camera.

Getting driving schools involved would be a huge step, as it is important for them to impart the "rules of the road" in addition to teaching new drivers how to operate a vehicle. Far too often, they only provide the basics of vehicle operation, but say nothing about observing lane markings, road signs, how to stop at traffic signals in an organized fashion, not driving the wrong way on the road, slower traffic staying to the left, etc etc.

                Suggestion

                Can i suggest something.

                1. Create a well made ppt with importance of Helmets & Safety gears with some real photographs of 2 wheeler accidents which should not be more than 4 or 5 slides

                2. Create a brief ppt on the road rules, discipline, respecting the other rider/driver/vehicle

                3. Create a combo of these which would get volunteers for this, which is very important with mentions that if we dont correct then who else can type of attitude related quotes. Few motivational stuff

With all these we should hit the schools / colleges / Offices / Residential complexes (Why Residential complex? the most influential people like moms, wifes, sisters are there) etc and probably with this then there might be some response & am sure after 2 or 3 such programs, am sure one of the product guys would help in sponsoring atleast with some name

Once a small group is created then look at adding more volunteers from schools & colleges & youngsters would come in. With that we can have enough people on the roads to help the cops in regularising atleast sometime

Even after doing all these, we should not miss out on the basics, we need to ensure all the volunteers and flag bearers still need to meet up once in a while and ensure everybody follows this. It should be a chain process and even if the group becomes bigger and bigger, we should still be creating awareness at schools / colleges etc.
Never Give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

                Cheers
