  • Octane Estes parts replacement

My first post in a long time

Coming to the question, I had bought a Hero Octane Estes in 2010, The reason for my purchase was, my college didn't allow bikes inside hostel so I sold my bike and went for this.
Used it regularly for 2yrs and it's lying unused since then. Now that I'm out of college I want to use it for small errands at home, instead of bike.
From the beginning itself I didn't like the quality of the cycle and most irritating part was the unavailability of spares.

After reading through the forum I realized my first goof up as I bought a mountain bike for road use. So I want to change the rims to fit smaller road tires and replace the other worn parts, since spares from Hero aren't available.
The current condition of the cycle is that rims have rust on the side walls, front forks and v-brake rims have rust on it.

A few days back I saw the bicycle spares section on Flipkart, is it advisable to buy spares like tyres & tubes from them? Also please suggest alternate sources for spares.
Which rim should I go for since I'll be using the cycle on roads. I want to fix everything myself as I don't want the local cyclewalla to ruin my cycle. Any specific tools I need to purchase for regular maintenance?

I wouldn't advise spending money on repairing this bike. In a nutshell, the bike is just not worth it. Since you are going to be using this bike for short errands, just continue using it in stock form. For the rust, visit a local repair shop, they will remove it with kerosene. If the tires and tubes are usable then use them, if they need to be changed then change them with anything you get in the local shop. The money you spend on the Octane for small errands will just not be worth it.

If you are interested/ or later on get intersted in Cycling, then buy a better bike. Till then enjoy the octane as is
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Yeah I planned to get a better road bike in an year or so, until then I'd be using the octane. the only things I wanted to change were the rims and tyres, the paint lining on the side walls of rim goes away every now and then, which started rust on the rim surface. Also the brakes squeak a lot when it grips these worn out patches.

I observed a lot of hercules rims which are as good as new even after a year's usage. So I thought of replacing my octane rims with hercules road bike rims and slimmer tyres instead of the current mtb tyres on the octane. What do you think?

And the current specs on the stock tyre are 56-599(26x2.30).

The more money you spend the better you can make the Octane. But the question is, whether it is worth it. From what I have heard, Hercules bikes are slightly better than Hero's. But just about.

For city riding, ideal tire size should be something like a 26x 1.5 max. But again for the minimal usage the cycle is seeing, the change would not be worth it.
