Firefox has taken the initiative in India to popularize cycling. The MD of Firefox, Shiv Inder Singh, said that for a sport to grow in popularity, the people of the place need to look up to champions. The goal of this venture is to build a champion. To try and get a medal at the Asian Games in Korea in 2014. To this end the company will be getting world class trainers and training methods to the team, to give them an opportunity at the highest level. He further stated, that such a venture does not guarantee success, but is an experiment as much as it is a goal. He further congratulated the cyclists who had achieved a lot without any infrastructure and hoped that they would do better with the backing of Firefox. On being asked about his views on the Customs Duties which were tripled last year on cycles by the central govt., Mr. Singh said, that Firefox was in talks to form a group of cycle importers, so that they can get the govt. to reduce the same. As cycling is a green sport and increasing the costs of imported cycles, makes it only more difficult for Indians to take up cycling as a sport.
Onkar Singh, Cycling Federation of India, said that the emphasis should be on young cyclists. So that they have a sufficiently long career to make a mark for themselves on the world stage. The CFI is also planning to open a training centre in New Delhi to help facilitate youngsters in this sport.
Srinath Rajam, Team Director and Coach, said that the team will be trained by the Peaks Coaching Group. This is the group that started Power Training. Sachin Parmar, the best cyclist of the team will be training under Tim Cusack, a coach who trains pros only. The team will be trained using modern scientific methods to ensure that the team is competitive on the world stage.
