• Project Collarbone: Cycling on a Pump Track

This is a short video of some of us xBhpians from Delhi who hit a pump track in our vicinity for a Sunday of fun. It has been named 'Project Collarbone' because that is the bone which is the first to give way when a biker crashes, as happened with the star of this video driftjockey!

Shot and edited by me and a friend of mine Sirus. I did the video he did the audio. This was the first for the both of us.

Unfortunately we got much more than what we had bargained for. The day of fun also brought us truckloads of bad luck. We started the morning with a puncture in my friends tyre, i changed the tube with a new one and repaired the old one and carried it. 3 km into the ride the same guy broke his gear cable and couldn't change gears and therefore was stuck on a single speed MTB!!! After a lovely 25 km ride we finally reached the Pump track called Pedallers Village.

We went about our business of going as fast as we possibly could. As much as our skill and courage allowed us. Until the hero crashed and broke his collarbone. We then called for help and waited for the car to come and collect the bike and the wounded soldier. During the wait, we were inundated in the heaviest shower that NCR has faced this season. It hasn't rained this year at all, but it did when we were out on the road with no rain protection! Some days your luck goes for a walk, leaving you to fend for yourself. This was one of those days!

In the pouring rain we made our way homewards, after a bit the other guy had a puncture in his rear tyre and we were trying our best to repair the tube in the heavy rain. We couldn't see anything, feel anything and the tube remained as it was. I pulled out the spare tube i was carrying and realized even that had a fine puncture. A slow leak which allowed the rider to go for a few hundred metres before refilling. As we were leaving we realized that a pair of cycling gloves had got washed away in the rain.

After the rain finally slowed to a drizzle we got our phones out only to see them look like a pair of goldfish in the plastic packet in which we had kept it to be 'safe'! My iphone and another guy's Nexus 4 were soaked and with no hope of ever working again. When it rains it pours!

Things that we gained from that day -

An awesome experience riding a Pump Track.

    What we lost -

    - Two tubes to punctures
    - A gear cable
    - A pair of cycling gloves
    - Two smartphones and
    - a collarbone!

Do any of regret it? Nope not at all. Ok, maybe driftjockey might a teenie weenie lil bit

Here is why it is fun to ride a Pump Track (taken from the internet) -

Riding a pump track will teach you a number of critical skills that can benefit you in tangible ways out on the singletrack:
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

It is as easy you want it to be. The track is built such, that a novice can go slow and easy and still enjoy it. But as you get better you start cranking up the speeds and the danger levels also go up at the same rate.

Unfortunately once in a while you go faster than your luck and skill

Monk, next time be sure to use condoms. I mean to save your gadgets, condoms are surprisingly waterproof and if you put gadgets and money there, and tie the open ends with a rubber band, it would be dry even when the angel decides to piss over you.
          I am back!

Now which gadgets are you talking about

But seriously i prefer ziplock bags which can accommodate both my phones, wallet and anything else. Unfortunately this wonderful plastic bag i keep in my motorcycling backpack and forgot to transfer it to my cycling backpack before the ride. A costly mistake indeed!!!
