  • Suggestions for a road bike

    Hi Guys,
Cycling bug has got me again after 4 years, Now primarily for the fitness reason.
Few years back(read 4 years) I was a cycling regular with my BSA SLR photon doing solo rides in the weekend evenings for about 40-45 km in the outskirts of Hyderabad with no signs of any cycling apparel. May be I used to buy a water bottle and carry it under my regular shirt .

Now I am in Mumbai, a little over 30 in age ,around 5'8" height and haven't been on a cycle for a while. Now I again want to get back to regular cycling. This will help me to improve my fitness along with some relaxation. I will be able to ride on the roads(NaviMumbai) which are relatively free and may occasionally take highway towards Khapoli. Now I am interested in buying a Road bike which will allow me to travel distances without getting too tired.I need suggestions from you for the following.
    • Which bike, My budget is a miserly 20K, little stretchable but not by much.
    • Where to Buy, This is the biggest problem, The cycle shops seem to be few and the fellows not too responding, I just don't want to take the bike they throw at me.
    • Bike Parking, I will probably have to park it in the common areas under the flats, They are safe from theft but children may fiddle with the uncommon creatures(road bike).
    • Bike Maintenance, This is also a concern, I hope there are bike which are resistant to rusting, which is a problem here. How will be the service options.....can they be serviced at the regular shops etc.
    • Cycling groups, Love to ride in a group for long rides, Any one from NaviMumbai.

    Thanks in advance

Well this is a good time for you to get back into cycling.

A road bike is a good decision, but you yourself have answered your question. Good roadbikes don't come within 20k. You either need to stretch your budget or start hunting for a used bike.

Where to buy: There are a few stores in Bombay, you will have to search for them. Will try adding more information about this.

It makes much more sense to carry your bike up to your flat and keep it inside the house. Children love to fiddle with gears on a parked bike which eventually screws it up.

It is no rocket science, a little bit of google and youtube would make you capable of doing most things yourself. DIY was never as simple as on a engineless bike!!!

Cycling groups - Can't help you with that, since i have always avoided riding in a group. But Om Vaikul (xBhpian who recently cycled to Spiti) i think rides somewhere in Navi Mumbai.

Make sure you test ride a few road bikes to get an approximate idea of the size you require. Getting a wrong size is no fun!!!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Thanks Monk,
Firefox seems to have a model around 17K and other at 21K, but the general suggestion on net is not in favour of Firefoxes. Any idea about Suncross, they have a couple of bike less than 20K.

I wouldn't buy a roadbike from either of the two, except if i had no other option. Since you are in Bombay, have a look for good second hand deals, if nothing works out, then go for one of these.

These bikes, especially road bikes tend to give a lot of small niggling issues, which can rob the joy off cycling.

^^Shimano Tourney derailleurs on a road bike? Never seen that before... Personally, I would steer clear of this one.

I have checked out the Hero UT top of the line bikes. The ones which cost a lakh plus, they looked mighty impressive. Haven\'t ridden them just seen them in the flesh.

But i would stay away from these bikes. Nothing impressive about them. With that budget i would suggest adding a few thousand more and getting a better bike in around 22k etc. Or look for good used bikes in Bombay.
