  • My 1939-40 Hercules Deluxe Bicycle. Restoration and conversion to a classic roadster!

    Hey Guyz!
This time, I got hold of a bicycle used by my ancestors of ancestors.
    Yeah!
I went to my grandma's home and I went to the store room what is there.
I saw all sorts of things like old cardboard boxes, old TV sets, etc etc.
And one thing I saw with a black colour cover on it. I removed it with fear.
There stood a bicycle named Hercules De-luxe !!
I asked my grandma about that and she said that the cycle came as a gift from a friend of my grandpa's dad. It was bought in 1939-1940 (bought on Jan 1 manufactured in 1939)

It was used till 1995 by my uncle (mom's brother) after which a Bajaj Spirit was bought and then the cycle was retired.

    So, inspected the cycle.

Wheels are bent. Need to remove those bends.
Tyres are worn, tube is punctured and torn.
Paint was gone. Will repaint it to Glossy Black or the original Glossy Green!
Brakes are worn and the assembly itself need to be changed.
Will find more as it was only checked on top.

Planning to disassemble it and check all the parts in a month (yes, a school boy's life. parents will not allow me to got grandma's home myself withouth them as it is too faraway from my home).

Will post some snaps! And don't forget to give your suggestions too!!!

Nice find. Pick up the bike from your grandparents house and forget all your homework and work only on the cycle
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: My 1939-40 Hercules Deluxe Bicycle. Restoration and conversion to a classic roads

Sorry for the late updates guys.

        OK, saw it today finally!

Surprisingly, brakes were functioning, chain can be rotated, and everything was smooth!
Rusts, only frame was not rusted, everything was rusted like handlebars, mudguards, etc.

And today, I had to go to a cycle shop which is 2 kms away from my home for the restoration.
Tried to tow it by bike, cant get it right and with least success.
And I decided to pedal it till there!
You guys know that the tyres and the tubes would be damaged like hell, but, I was able to ride it and pedalled to that shop.

I got a quote of Rs. 2000 for full restoration and gave him the cycle and an advance of Rs. 500.

I decided to paint it to the original Olive Green Shade.

Photos of my Hercules Popular Deluxe,

Will get it by next Saturday, too much time should be taken as I have opted for painting and the paint should get dried fully. Otherwise, I can get it tomorrow without paint job!

And the comparison between before and after restoration:

              @All
FYI, some parts has not been changed like the seat(seat cover is changed, but inner seat is all the same), crank(only the crank where we have our feet and pedal), rear brake assembly, etc as they are the original English made.
My LBS mechanic validated that it was made before 1950 just by looking at parts (like frame geometry, fork, etc).
The carrier is also same, it is VIMCO make.

              List of parts not changed:
              Rear brake connecting rods,
Seat (seatcover is changed with cushioning inside),
Crank (where the pedals connect, that big wheel with teeth),
              Stand,
              Bearings,
              Front fork,
              Tyres,
              Tubes,
and I may have not listed some.
The amazing fact is both the Tyres and Tubes are the original (made before 1970). The rear was punctured only once.
I thought the tube should have got torn and the tyres should have got weak, but both are holding pretty good.

It surely rides smooth without any noise coming from anywhere.
That seats are the best part, that integrated shocks absorbs shocks very well!

It is not a restoration actually.
Just a makeover or a partial rebuild.

Started doing some workout with my Roadster!

I use CycleDroid app on my phone with GPS 'ON'.
It is really a good app!

Please trust me, don't get a Roadster if you love to ride it fast or if you want a lightweight bicycle.
It weighs a ton and what I enjoy in it is, it is suited for max. 10 km/h, that speed range is where maximum fun an enjoyment is, very stable, stops in 3 secs with both brakes applied (:-P), handles awesome, and you will feel like it is gliding, I mean very smooth.
If you try to ride fast on a roadster, you will get tired soon, very soon indeed.

Some idiot(s) peeled of the stickers in my Roadster and thrown away on road :-(
Will need to print some close to original logos.

See below for my close to original customized logo:

                          Hi!
I am in the process of converting my Roadster into a fixie or going to put a fixed gear wheel.
For that, I wanted a freewheel to 'convert' it to a fixed gear wheel.
I used a 'USED' or 'WORNOUT' second-hand freewheel.

I bought it for Rs. 20.
Then wiped it with a cloth and took it to a Welding shop.
He welded at 4 points (pictures will explain you!) each side.
                          He charged me Rs. 30.
Yet to install it in my Roadster. LBS mechanic asks Rs. 30 as Labour, his reasons were unsatisfactory when I asked why it shouldnt be done at Rs. 15 or 20.

Pictures will show you and make you clear about the welded points:

Will the weld points be strong enough to take the load of the power being transmitted, the last thing you would want is for the welding to come apart when cycling hard.

Yeah, it will hold, assured by that guy, otherwise, he will weld again for free.
