• A small prayer for a quick & complete recovery of prof amit mukherjee

Prof Amit Mukherjee is an avid cycling enthusiast who left a well settled life in USA to come back to India and teach in IIT-Kanpur. He has traveled to many places in India, including Leh-Ladakh on cycle. He was very popular amongst his students as well as fellow teachers. He was hit by a bus when he & his students left IIT Knp campus on their regular cycling ride. He is on ventilator support.

Requesting XBHP members to pray for his quick & complete recovery.

Thanks a lot The Monk for quick approval. He is as mad as you are. And mind you, old but young at heart. He has an extended family living in CR Park, New Delhi & he would stay there & cycle to IIT-D whenever on a visit. I have missed cycling with him. We all pray for his quick recovery.

Status

Update from one of the person, who might be his old student !
Below post showed up on my fb wall.. Hope he recovers soon

They performed a tracheostomy today. Amit has been turned a little and he is looking better. Seemed to be at peace. All vitals in control. Slight temperature but controlled. Some signs of pneumonia (negated later) has been indicated and his antibiotic treatment has been suitably modified.
I see different versions of the accident going around. It happened about 25 km from IIT, around 7:40am when Amit was cycling in front of a group of 10. A bus came from behind and Moni was hit (exact point of impact is unclear). The students called police, flagged down a car, took him to PPN hospital. IIT doctor reached very quickly. He was placed on ventilator and moved to Regency in an ambulance.
At Regency, a CT scan on 24th confirmed multiple hemorrhage, of small size and distributed. XRay scans and other pathological tests conducted. Second CT scam on 25th confirmed status quo. MRI on 26th indicated some injury to the brain stem.
My request to All.... Please don't call my parents. Call me, my sister or brother. The parents are very upset and discussing this all the time is more upsetting
Especially do NOT call the hospital please
Overall status remains the same. We have had reviews by other doctors and there is consensus that we need to wait and let him recover.
I will be updating once in a while.

3rd Feb update
============
Update : Some good news! Today Amit's pupils showed miniscule response to light. Reaction was only slight, but is encouraging. Fever is down. It is now at 100 but had come down to 98.9 after a long time Responses back at the same level as yesterday. Broncoscopy was done and no major problem has been detected.

Re: A small prayer for a quick & complete recovery of prof amit mukherjee

Update from Tamilnadu Cycling Club Facebook group :
He is safe and back to home.

Update for 28 Feb 2016 :

Amitabh getting discharged from JPNATC, AIIMS today. He's being moved to the ward soon and likely to be released by 4pm. Ambulance, nurse, attendant all in place.

Arrangements made at home and parents are mentally prepared. Home readied by Ma and Sejhomama. Kamla in charge of all daily chores, care, food etc.

Amit's condition is good and he has been off the ventilator and oxygen for two days+ now. Spoken with the duty doctors, consultants and seems to be ok.

Update for 29 th Feb

Morning update from home :
Amit had a good night @ home last night. The nurse and attendant were awake through the night ( we checked!) and took good care of him.
His glucose levels are in the normal range after the move home. His fasting blood sugar this morning was normal as well.

Update on Amit Mukerjee:

Taken from Tamilnadu Cycling club FB group.

I spent the last ten days in Delhi, with my family, and especially a lot of time with Moni. The good news is that he is responsive now in a way that the doctors had not thought possible; he can do a thumbs up for yes and
raise a forefinger for no, press a buzzer when asked, move his hands and feet and head (no paralysis), and he opens his eyes and seems to focus for a few minutes before getting exhausted. All of this is fantastic, but not all the reactions are consistently reproduced, so there is a long road ahead. He has an excellent day nurse who he responds to the most, good friends who keep visiting and regaling him with stories and praying for him, and the wonderful presence of both my parents as well as Ashis Mukherjee and Ishita Mukherjee and Sreoshi Mukherjee, who, between them, have ensured that he has the best possible medical care available. For the past week, he has been going out on a wheelchair every evening to the verandah for an hour and he seems to enjoy the birdsong and evening light and look forward to that time. I was doing some multimodal stimulation exercises before I left (stimulation of the five senses in a 10 min period) but what got him faintly smiling in the past two days were the stories you have texted and emailed, all those fantastic memories of his Eaterminator days where he would competitively devour rotis by the inch and swim in the middle of the night just because ... I am on my way back to Chicago now, but I will be back in Delhi for the Fall semester to teach at IIT Delhi, and I hope to see his progress first hand. Please keep the stories and the memories and the prayers coming.
